I found this article to be an interesting rebuttal of Sun's philosophy behind such a planner buyout.

In short the article claims, through entries from Sun's President's blog, that the company is pondering the purchase of Novell because it fears IBM is planning the same. However, IBM has been a major player in the recent SCO lawsuits, and according to the writer, IBM would have paid their dues in a buyout of Novell. Very interesting read.
