A new CNN poll shows that Newt Gingrich is falling back into a tie with Mitt Romney for the Republican presidential nomination.
Most polls this month showed Gingrich, the former House speaker, surging past Romney to the top of the field, with numbers in the 30s. But Monday's CNN/ORC International poll shows the two now tied at 28% and Texas Rep. Ron Paul in third with 14%.
Romney's appeal to GOP voters appears to be based mostly on his personal qualities, many of which -- including likeability and trustworthiness -- are problems for Gingrich. But the poll suggests that Gingrich has erased Romney's lead in two major items: who is likely to be the party's nominee and who has the best chance of beating President Barack Obama.
The poll, conducted between Friday and Sunday, also shows that only a third of Republicans say they"ve decided who to vote for and that 56% say they could still change their mind. Ref. CNN
Did Gingrich bend campaign laws with his 'independent' committee?

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich failed to submit the required 10,000 signatures needed to qualify for the Republican primary ballot in Virginia, the Republican Party of Virginia announced via Twitter early Saturday.
The announcement came one day after the Virginia GOP determined that Texas Gov. Rick Perry didn't meet the same requirements to appear on the ballot.
Virginia requires candidates to submit petitions with 10,000 signatures from registered Virginia voters. Additionally, 400 signatures must come from voters in each of the commonwealth's 11 congressional districts.
The Virginia GOP said on its Twitter feed that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul had both submitted enough signatures. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum did not submit petitions.

A person hired to collect names to get Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on the ballot for the Virginia primary turned in fraudulent signatures, Gingrich says.
"We hired somebody who turned in false signatures. We turned in 11,100 -- we needed 10,000 - 1,500 of them were by one guy who frankly committed fraud," Gingrich told a woman at a campaign stop in Algona, Iowa.

Newt Gingrich opens debate by denying claim by his ex-wife that he sought an open marriage.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich thanked "everyone in South Carolina who decided to be with us in changing Washington" and propelling him to victory in the Palmetto State's Republican presidential primary Saturday.
Gingrich's projected victory marks a stunning turnaround for a campaign that observers had left for dead -- again -- just weeks ago.
With the victory, Gingrich becomes the third GOP candidate to win an early GOP contest this year. It is the first time since 1980 that three different GOP candidates have won nominating contests in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
Gingrich's comeback is just his latest. He came out of nowhere to top national polls in late fall on the strength of debate performances, but dropped again ahead of the Iowa caucuses as opponents hammered him in Iowa ads.
Romney congratulated Gingrich in a speech to supporters and said he would continue fighting for the nomination.
What is Glenn's problem with Newt Gingrich?
With Newt performing so well in the debates, which has translated into a primary victory in South Carolina, many of Glenn's casual fans have wondered why he has been so thorough in his criticism of the former Speaker of the House. After all, if he can win debates in the primary then surely he can beat Obama in debates in the general election. After that, it's smooth sailing to the White House, right? Wrong. Glenn isn't looking for a progressive that will only be Obama-lite, he's looking for a true conservative to actually save the country Ref. Source 8
Gingrich feels the ire of the tiger
The composer of the Rocky III anthem Eye of the Tiger is suing Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich to stop him from using the song at campaign events.
The federal lawsuit, filed in Chicago by Rude Music Inc., contends Gingrich has used the song since 2009 to herald his arrival at rallies and public events.
The lawsuit says Gingrich uses the song without the permission of Frank Sullivan, who with Jim Peterik, composed the song and copyrighted it in 1982.
The lawsuit asks for an injunction to prevent Gingrich from using the song, as well as damages and attorneys' fees
Attorneys for the Gingrich campaign couldn't be reached for comment late Monday.
