Now that is interesting, I wonder how it works and if pirates will not once again try to figure out a way around it. Plus I am already thinking. the fact that they still allow a copy to be made, even if it is one still leaves the piracy freeway open. What do you think?

Well as an artist myself who sells music it's illegal if it's done and I don't get paid for it. As for the sales of actual CD's dropping, that to me is just different from the way I listen to music, because I like having the actual artist CD. I lose those all the time, but sometimes to me it's just like having a collection of CD's I guess.
Rather off topic, but... For now though I encourage the mp3's because my music is only available on the internet anyway. |

I find it interesting that one of the banner ads on this topic is for Napster. They had to face a long litigation related to their unlawful download permits.
Music is an intellectual property and is covered by copyright just like written word. The internet has blurred those lines but if the artist is not getting their royalty from the copy of music, then it is illegal. Period. I don't pretend to know how so many music sites can allow download. That's too complicated for my brain, but as a writer, I understand the problem very well. Everything of my creative writing that I put on the net, anywhere I put it, carries my personal copyright notice. Always. Comments like these are actually covered under copyright as well but this is intended for public view so the effect is a little different. We're all covered by the website copyright.
Record companies are complaining about the loss in sales but if they didn't charge so much for music it wouldn't be such a problem. It is a matter of corporate profit. I do not understand how they can justify the cost of music as the actual cost of cutting one cd is pennies compared to the $12.00 to $25.00 price of the cd. Again, in my eyes, the problem is corporate greed. However, the writer of the lyrics and the writer of the music work hard for their creation and the artist who records the music works hard for their talent. These people deserve to be paid for their effort. Everyone who is involved in the production of the music deserves to be paid and pirating music is theft, plain and simple.
We've personally come across the "limited copy" problem and because of it some of my favorite music can not be on my computer any longer. My problem. I believe the artists and employees of the record company deserve their pay. I'm not against MP3s but I believe the music should be paid for, always. The format doesn't mean a thing. However, a person who owns the original cd of music should be able to copy it onto any medium they own, once. Whatever way the music companies "know" something has been copied to a particular medium, it should be recoded so that all forms of copy may be considered. From cd to computer and from computer to MP3 or a burned cd should be written into the code. My daughter copies all her cds to a burned version so she can preserve the pristine condition of her original.
