Suriname

Independence from the Netherlands was granted in 1975. Five years later the civilian government was replaced by a military regime that soon declared a socialist republic. It continued to rule through a succession of nominally civilian administrations until 1987, when international pressure finally forced a democratic election. In 1989, the military overthrew the civilian government, but a democratically-elected government returned to power in 1991.

Suriname is currently in a boundary dispute with Guyana over the exploration of natural resources in bordering marine regions. Apparently, the dispute started when Guyanese oil rigs came under fire and was evicted by Suriname gunboats. Presently, the Guyanese will have to wait up to five years before an international council makes a decision on the dispute. One wonders if the Suriname government will begin its own exploration during this time or whether there is a ban on all activities in those regions?
