Comments: Is it possible to teach yourself martial arts and become good enough to defend yourself on the streets? Is there a DIY [do it yourself] program?
I'm not a martial artist but I did take a few sessions a long time ago. One thing I learned is you definitely need a teacher and someone to spar with because just making the motions on your own is not enough.
You can Learn from a Manual, but this is very limited.
A good teacher one to one is good, but you will only learn from their experience.
A class with a few members will be better, as you learn from each other.
A few different styles together is excellent, you learn from a different angle each time and from a different tradition.
There are some styles where you can learn solo, such as Iaido or Tai Chi. You can condition your body and technique on your own, but for combat you need at least a partner. In recent times I have trained on my own mostly, but I have had Kumite experience, some Chi Sau and I have wrestled with some Ju Jitsu fighters over the years.
Kata is only as good as it's application.
