The US is in the process of making laws that would curb employees from using work networks to access porn and other non-work related sites. This in an effort to stop time wasting and more especially to stop users from causing viruses and worms from infecting computers (Most common in porn sites).

Do you know of a fellow employee that uses the net for porn? Do you tell them anything about it?

Well, I'm a high school teacher and we do not have access to the internet. I cannot believe somebody can be using their work time surfing on porn on the net. It is disgusting!!!!!. I think Farseer mentioned before she knows somebody who did this.

Well, it was not a co-worker, but the owner of the company! Who also happened to be in a leadership position in my church. Terrible story! But I've heard of people doing this on the job -- it's bad news on a number of different levels, culminating now in the *government* getting involved to make laws against it. How can people be so stupid?

Government certainly shouldn't be involved in any way. However, I fully support the rights of companies and business owners to be able to take action.

One thing that I CAN see government doing about it is to ensure that businesses are protected from EEO and other types of lawsuits when they fire people for such actions. Right now, businesses have to do all sorts of things just to be able to terminate someone's employment.

This is true. Employers have to be so careful about terminating people anymore... they have to "build a case" and document everything that happens. Even in so-called "employment at will" states.

I dont know of anyone personally who uses work computers for porn surfing, but a lot of us do visit non-work related sites while at work. I am posting from work right now I dont agree with banning all non-work related sites because even though some people may abuse this privilege, the majority of us can police ourselves accordingly and still be productive. It also allows for us to release while at work, if we can get away from work stuff and have a little fun. I think more people will be disgruntled at work if they are completely banned from all non-work sites.

The computers are the property of the company, your time is also given tot he company, and you are on comapny property.

This simply a case of property rights - as if someone were in your own house.

of course companies may set the conditions for the use of such things.

People can be disgruntled all they want, but it is NOT an allowable practice to surf the internet on company time, on company computers. My company provides access to the Internet because we have legitimate reasons for using it -- I access websites related specifically to my work. I can't say I haven't occasionally checked my personal email at work, but that was on my lunch break and not during regular paid hours.

Another reason I would NOT want to surf the Web at work is that there is NO expectation of privacy. The company, exercising its right to monitor your activity while on their time and on their premises, can examine the workstation you are permitted to use at any time and access anything you've ever typed, downloaded, opened, or read, etc.
