Ferets: Good Or Bad Pets?

Ferets: Good Or Bad Pets?

Are ferrets good pets? Well, that is a VERY tough question to answer, so I won't, I will just tell you how they act.

First things first, ferrets LOVE to play. So if you can give them the run of the house, that would be best. However, if you can't, then at least buy them a large cage, with multi levels. Ferrets sleep often, but when they are up, you should give them much attention, or they won't feel loved. You should give them 2-4 hours of time out of the cage daily. Also, you should keep their food dish filled constantly, however, they absolutely LOVE to tip it over. So you might want to put the food at the bottom of the cage in the dish before you put fresh stuff in.

Ferrets are escape artists, so if you don't want them in a room, don't leave them alon for 2 seconds, as they can and will get into something you don't want them to be in. Also, they love it when they are in a spot where they are inaccesible to you. Be warned, because in their curiosity, they often get into a spot where they can not leave. They can get into any opening the size of their head.

If you don't have a lot of time to spend, I would recommend getting an older ferret, as they are a little calmer, and the chances are they are litter trained. However, they still require much attention.

If you wish to train your ferret from the ground up, I would recommend a very young ferret. Be forewarned though, they are not litter trained, and will go in just any old corner in the house, until they learn differently. Even at arms length, they still manage to back into the corner and do their business!

A middle aged ferret is good if you don't want to spend hours training it, and you still want it to be spunky and energetic.

I will write another post on discipline, but not until I have someone interested. Feel free to share your comments, and, *laugh* give charisma!! biggrin.gif

The only thing I know about ferrets is that they smell very strongly -- even after the musk or scent glands are removed. Bleagh! And they leave an oily feeling on your hands after petting or holding them. I'm sure they are fun, etc etc, but I couldn't get past the stink.

Comments: Hi, I work in a pet store and I work with the little buggers all the time. love them but they are a handful as babies and tend to be quite mouthy which is why I'm interested to hear what you have to say about discipline!

They are a pet I think intended for older children 10 plus and more so for adults. I have had exposure to them from friends who had then and one word of advice you have a small child just do not bother as they will be bit at some point. Not because the ferret is mean but it will bit if squeezed to hard to has reason to suspect it is in grave danger. Yes being sat on does count here.

I do not care who claims they do not smell they do. You have carpet remove them and give them a box old briefcase or something as they special hiding place it will love you for it. I also would like to know more on training them as some as very quit and others are just a ball of energy that never quit and they are so fun to watch and play with. yes they like cuddly time also.

Comments: I am 24 and currently I have dog who is giving me so much trouble that I am thinking about giving her up, so anyways me and my daughter who is 7... Where discussing about getting a ferret as a pet... so far the only thing that worries me is the smell, do they really smell that bad... I cannot give them a bath. Pretty much everything else I think we can handle ...because we are fun energetic people and I know we would have tons of fun with a ferret .O and is it better to get a pair or one.

Not trying to to be mean but the smell is the skin oil even if the glands are removed it is just their nature. They also do demand a lot of attention two might make that easier I would ask your local breeder as they are a great help. Odor will always be an issue I found a nice response to this question by some one who has owned ferrets, here is the link you might like to look at it as they gave some great suggestions including what to feed them.

Comments: My room mates have two ferrets. And I thoroughly hate them. They do smell, but not that bad if they are de-glanded and you put some anti-stink stuff in their water.

I will say this: they are cute, playful, and intelligent.

But that's as far as the good things go. That are virtual crap factories. Being around to potty train them is probably a full time job... And my roomates both have jobs. They will crap in inaccessible places, or right in front of doorways, to give you a nice surprize when you wake up for work half asleep... In the dark... Bare-footed. They will bite you through your socks, run under your feet, try to sprint into anywhere you don't allow them when you open the door, use their paws to open sink cabinets and try to chew through your cleaning chemical bottles. They will drag anything not nailed down, including boots and clothes, under furniture, where they proceed to gnaw it to pieces.

The only reason you would ever want a ferret if you were in your right mind is if you lived off of a trust fund and wanted a child but couldn't have one, or if you have a fetish for dealing with outrageously spoiled and destructive children.

You are very right they are like having a small very very active child with a behavior problem. I have seen them well trained though and I think you are right it is a full time job getting them there and having two is most likely harder then one expedientially in magnitude.
