Have you ever looked at the city, county, state, and federal taxes that are included in the price you pay for gasoline? It amounts to 43%. Then you ad refining and marketing ( 17% ) and the cost of getting it out of the ground ( 37% ) and you leave the oil company with 3% of the total. That's right. The oil company gets to keep a great big three cents out of each dollar they generate in business.
I'm sorry to say I'm old enough to remember a day when there was no EPA to stop us from drilling and building refineries and government wasn't taking almost half the profit for doing absolutely nothing. Oh, and if you would like to do a little research, see how many Americans own stock in oil companies through mutual funds.
No, I don't own any oil wells, or oil stock. I'm a business man that knows out of every dollar turned in my business I get to keep a few pennies and the government has their grubby tax hand in that! Now, I'm tired of beating this dead (price of oil) horse. I'm going to go some place else and play.

The Most Expensive Gas in America?
Yes, it may be the most expensive gas in America. But $5.20 doesn't begin to explain essence - the rich, off-beat, some might say, eccentric, essence of Gorda, Calif. [..] "You know, it's a little expensive," one passerby said. "We put $20 in and hope. Keep our fingers crossed and hope that we get to another gas station that is slightly more reasonable - maybe only $4 a gallon."

I guess it depends on how far you have to drive.
The economic landscape of the US is changing rapidly. If prices of everything keep going up in the same trend as now, it's unsustainable. Something has to give, lifestyles will change.
It cost $60 last time I filled my gas tank! That's outrageous.
I'm close enough to my office (1.5 miles) that I could bike it or walk it, same with my daughter's school (2 blocks). This is an option we've already considered, simply because it won't be long before we may *have to* choose an alternative.
