A couple comments here:
I filled up my tank yesterday and was happy I only paid $2.35 a gallon. We are STILL about $1 more than the rest of the country. What gives? We have the crude and refine it ourselves. Doesn't make much sense.
I had 100 gallons of heating oil delivered today - $2.85 a gallon. That is MUCH better than the over $5 we were paying just a few months back but still a lot higher than the rest of the country.
Finally, you bring up natural gas prices. We have been fighting to put in a natural gas pipeline here in Alaska for years. We have plenty just sitting there going to waste. But politics and egos are keeping it in the ground instead of in the pipeline where it could be doing some good and help keep those prices down to an affordable level. Not to mention the jobs other economical boosts a pipeline would bring.

OPEC is the biggest dealer in oil I believe. They largely control how other markets are affected. You have to know that the Russians want to boost their military power and need oil prices high to do so.
Alaskans are just paying the price of economic delay. There are some places that take longer to benefit from anything, Alaska is one of those places.

With oil prices pretty much hovering around $39 a barrel right now it is going to be interesting to see what happens when the news of the inventories in the us are still going up. I think that oil will drop to around $30 a barrel before it is all said and done.
It was a tossup where to post this -- in the Venezuela thread or here. I think it's more relevant here, though it does make a big statement about the economy in Venezuela, too. I guess oil is truly a global marker of the health of the economy.

Venezuela shuts cheap oil pipeline for 200,000 US homes Tue Jan 6, 2009 7:11 pm ET WASHINGTON (AFP) - Some 200,000 US households will no longer get cheap heating oil from Venezuela after the state-owned CITGO subsidiary announced it was dropping the program due to falling oil prices, the organization in charge of distributing the oil said Tuesday. "Citizens Energy has recently been informed by CITGO that due to falling oil prices and the world economic crisis, CITGO has been forced to re-evaluate all their social programs, including the heating oil program," Citizen Energy Corporation spokesman Brian O'Connor told AFP by telephone. "Close to 200,000 households throughout the US" benefited from the Venezuelan program since 2005, he said, adding that Venezuelan oil donations in 2007 amounted to 100 million dollars. Leftist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in 2005 irked the administration of President George W. Bush when he announced the cheap heating oil program for US households in the midst of rising oil prices. Some branded the offer as propaganda. Since July, however, the price of oil has plummeted from 130 dollars a barrel to a little over 27 dollars, raising concerns in Venezuela, which derives 90 percent of its foreign currency revenues from oil. The government gets half its funding from oil. Citizens Energy president Joseph Kennedy II said he personally appealed to Chavez to keep the discount oil program running, to no avail. O'Connor said the group was warned weeks ago by Citgo of its impending decision, which he regretted came as a shock "not only in the middle of the winter, but in the middle of an economic shot," referring to the global economic crisis. |

We seen a small jump in the pumps of late we are back steady at 80 cents a liter. Could be dollar value related also. Any increase is bad for a poor economy.

The latest increase of oil prices was fueled by the tension in the middle east And Israels attack on the Gaza strip. I believe I heard some people on CNBC that oil may rise to $50 a barrel but that it would not be sustainable and drop back down to the $30-$35 range it has been at. Gas prices while they will be up for a few weeks should once again fall back down. I hope that this does happen.
I got this from the top: Oil Future: $45.00 -3.58. OPEC's plan to raise oil prices isn't working for them.

Opec does not control the price of oil like they think they do. Let them try to raise the price by cutting production. It has not worked for them yet. If they cut production all together that will lead to WWIII.
As far as Citgo goes there is a very big reason that I do not buy gas from any Citgo station. As long a mr Chaves is in power and trying to hurt the US economy I will not buy from his company.
