Dragons are very awsome, and when I was younger there were all I cared about. Now that I look on it, they are still some of my fav creatures, but I have grown a bit tired of them. Thye have become cliche, must as the elf and dwarf have become, to a fantasy novel. every one has them. to add to that would be how people have become obssed with creatures that are good, but normaly bad IE the drow. It was all good when it first stated, but now, its just been dragged out, and WAY to many people play as such creatures in online RPs. but back to the role of a dragon. I think, that they play what ever role is really needed. they do everything and anything now a days it seems.
Heh heh. I love dragons... well... unless they're pillaging, burning stuff, or otherwise being rude. Those are kinda hard to like, when they're trying to turn you into a bite-sized treat.
Anyway, I really like the roles most Japanese RPG game developers give for these guys (not only that, but they make them look super cool looking!). Heck, there are two games I can think of where dragons even had their own castles, and ruled justly. Sadly, one of those died (though she left an egg). One thing I don't get is the one in the other game that lives asks you and your group to take on the great evil that's threatening the world. What?! Why can't he do it? He's big an powerful. Well, at least he makes up for it by rescuing your group from falling to their doom after the battle, so I guess that evens things up. Obviously there's something I missed in the dialouge, or that the english translators missed. From what I hear, Japanese is a hard language to translate.
Edit: On a side note, I'm not a fan of the whole fire-breath thing. Their imposing enough with the wings and large size.
I don't know what it is, but on several occasions I've run into stuff that seems to pair dragons and wolves together, in one form or another. The major examples seem to be RPGs (specifically the Shining series, such as Shining Force and Shining Soul, which have anthromorphic versions of the two) and artists (can't think of any major examples at the moment). This strikes me as odd, and to add to the weirdness I actually was planning on making a story with two races based on those before I came across most of that. It's like I fell into the Twightlight Zone!
*Twightlight Zone theme plays. Attorneys representing Twightlight Zone yank out the CD and break it* cry.gif
Anyway, what are your thoughts on why lots of people may like these races in particular, or any animal based races in general? And have you guys came across any odd re-occuring instances of a race based on a certain animal? I know there are a lot of ones based on birds in some games (Tactics Ogre has Hawkmen, an MMORPG has one that's essentually an anthromorphic bird)
Message Edited! Talduras, sorry about the confusion, but I merged your new discussion about wolves and dragons into this one because it was very similar. Please check for existing topics before opening a new one. Thanks! |
Dragons... Yes, I'm fond of the brutes. Fantasy would seem somewhat naked without their silouhetting (Literally) existance.
Like most fantasy fans, I like dragons. Just the idea of something so powerful is exciting. But I find that the very idea of dragons is often overused. You want a relatively unique way of looking at dragons? Try Melanie Rawn's Dragon Prince and Dragon Star trilogies. Her dragons are more like intelligent creatures that are a part of the natural environment than monstrous, firebreathing, magical winged lizards. I love the way she uses dragons and have yet to see any other author that uses them the very same way that she does.
For me the role of dragons is one of a guardian of the natural order. They are the embodiment of the lands spirit. The alpha beast, keeping it real, so to speak. At first glance they are ominous foreboding beasts of destruction. Look more carefully and they are sentient beings with a higher purpose.
In the fantasy world try and think of anything fighting a dragon solo. Just about every scenario I can imagine the dragon owns the foe. It does not use cheap tricks to win, just sheer strength and ability. Strait forward and to the point with such overwhelming power one has to respect it.
Dragons provide a level of awesomeness that you can't get with other monster-creatures. Dragons are intelligent, powerful and they love to horde - perfect backbone for any fantasy story.
I liked the Dragonriders of Pern, I didn't read them all but the ones I did read were great. The White Dragon was my favorite.
One without dragons was The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, which I also found to be a good read.
By far my favorite was The Dark Elf Trilogy. My sorcerer is loosely based on Drizzt.
