I have done this to the level of submitting and getting government approval for an arcade (seven shops) to be built in a commercial district so I might be able to share a bit of information as it pertains to Trinidad. First of all if you are a small timer then you will need to look for a second job until you get popular, but once you do - wham - you are into the money. Architects can get from 1% to 3% of the total cost of the building. The great thing about being an architect is seeing your imagination actually created and used. Most people that get into this profession already are very created and dynamic.

I used to work for almost 3 years in an engineering office under a city government a couple years ago. I did alot of designing for government infrastructures. Work varied from new construction to renovation and repair. Pay was meager but for starters it was really good landing a stable, government job and a nice position. The seatback was I am not really "FREE" to create the kind of design that I want. For one, funding was limited so I was also limited with the kind of materials I wanted to use. Second, being in a government agency, officials and higher ranking employees usually already have their own "DESIGN" so you tend to just do the drafting for them. So what JB@Trinidad was saying and I quote:

didn't really apply with me. There wasn't much of an accomplishment there but experience was good enough. Promotion-wise, it depends on the boss if he likes you or not. I know people who are still there and working really hard but still haven't given any credit yet for their hardwork just because they are not the boss' or the current administration's people.

Architecture is a lucrative business only if you can make a name for yourself. Also right now, if you have computer-aided design knowledge you have more of an edge.
