NEW YORK (AP) Meseret Defar of Ethiopia has set a world record in women's 5,000 meters with a time of 14 minutes, 24.53 seconds.

So let's see 5000 meters is 5km which is about 3.1 miles. 3.1 miles in 14 minutes is about 4 minutes per mile. Yes, that is impressive! Not to sound stereotypical, but when I read the headline I was almost expecting an Ethiopian to have the record. I guess it is because they are known for their long distance running prowess.

I have studied the physique of such runners from Ethiopia and they all have one thing in common: extremely slim / underweight physiques that make them light and thus easy to make up speed. Their bone structure is not heavy or bulky as North Americans / Europeans.
