Wing Chun Kung Fu is the one I would suggest, Designed by a Shaulin Nun around the Crane and Snake systems of Wu Shu.
It relies on speed and focus and is probably the most efficient style of Martial art there is.

I do Taekwondo and for me its been great. I started doing it purely for self-defence and then became hooked. Many of my Taekwondo female friends also started for that reason. However, I have female friends who do Karate, Judo and Aikido. It all depends what fits with you. Just make sure you get a good club that does things traditionally as well as safely. I've always felt that street self defense classes are better for women than the traditional ones. If you're a woman then you might likely be caught from behind or mugged or worst, you need to know defense for these specific problems and not straight facing each other fighting.

If the course can last several years, then a pure Self Defence style is good, the style Krav Maga would be an example of this.
Unfortunately a little knowledge can prove dangerous. I know of women who have done a few lessons of so called self defence, this has left them with a totally unrealistic view of the world. An 8 stone lady should RUN AWAY from a 15 stone hooligan with a crowbar. Many people get false confidence from too few classes and not enough experience. There is no quick fix, martial art proficiency takes years of hard training with a good instructor. Train in a few styles, mix it with ground work and pressure point training. Just hope you never need to use it, and the best block is not to be there.

Comments: Unless you're a really big buff female then try kung fu because unlike the others it teaches you to use speed and vulnerabilities over brute force and strength like Karate does.
