Archie Comics

Have you ever been an Archie fan? Archie has been around a long time, and together with his pal Jughead, they have been spreading US pop culture all around the world.

Archie comics were easy to wheedle from my parents for two reasons:

1. They're often positioned in supermarkets next to the checkout register, and thus are a great and inexpensive "at least it's not a candy bar!" type item.

2. The whole Archie line of books hasn't changed all that drastically in over 50 years. The simple story described in the link is pretty much it - the characters and their misadventures make up the bulk of the stories - great stuff. When I was younger, there was no need to "screen" an Archie comic for anything inappropriate. My parents read them when they were younger, my sister and I read them, and I'm certain my kids will as well.

For you globetrotters: were Archie comics very popular anywhere else in the world? Was there some kind of nation-specific equivalent you remember reading when you were younger?

Well, growing up in Trinidad, I was exposed to them often both in the papers, comics and there were these half-comic size books that also sold quite frequently. Of course US literature / culture is basically all over the world, so you cannot escape it!
