Alleged Bad And Controversial Police Officers

Since it seems like we're reading a couple of cases where cops become murders, robbers and all sort of dotishness I created this thread with the purpose of discussing some cases we may see in the news. Take for instance the case in Sea Lots. Why is it that Assistant Police Commissioner Mervyn Richardson has denied what these residents are saying yet the report lodged at the Besson Street Police Station by officers from the CCTV Unit contradict that?

international QUOTE
Police who went to Sea Lots on Saturday night to investigate a report of a shooting have stated that they fired shots in the area but Assistant Police Commissioner Mervyn Richardson has denied this.

Residents of Pioneer Drive in Sea Lots yesterday complained that police officers, operating like bad boys, stormed their community and indiscriminately opened fire on them.

"Ladies who had their babies had to toss away their prams and run for their lives when they came into the area. Is bullets, left, right and centre. Anything that moved they fired shots at," a woman said as she recounted Saturday night's incident.

"It was pure madness inside up in here, and after they shoot up the place and traumatised the children who were playing in the yard, they were very rude to us when we tried to find out what caused it," one resident said.

Richardson, head of Anti-Crime Operations, however denied police were involved in any shooting at Sea Lots. Richardson said officers had responded to a report of a shooting but they did not engage anyone.

He said, "What you are telling me that the police went down there and shoot up the place is totally false. There is absolutely no basis and foundation for those allegations, because, it did not happen and I am not aware of that at all. Somebody has manufactured that, because, that did not happen. If what the relatives of these people say it's true then I hope justice is served and those officers involved can pay for what they have done. A full investigation should take place.

international QUOTE
The relatives of three people-a man and two women-shot dead by police on Friday night are demanding an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Abigail Johnson, 20, her best friend, Allana Duncan, 28, and construction worker, Kerron Eccles, 26, were shot and killed when police intercepted their car in Barrackpore around 9 p.m.

Police said officers were responding to a report that a man wanted for murder was seen in a car heading into Barrackpore. There was a chase and the occupants opened fire on the officers, police said.

The officers responded wounding the three. They were pronounced dead at the Princes Town District Hospital. But their relatives believe it was a case of mistaken identity and are crying out for justice.

The suspect was not found in the vehicle, police said. Source 9

Name: Spence

Comments: Two women with kidnapping charges pending in an stolen car with a man.The police tried to stop them and alleged that they were shot at before returning fire. How is it that there officers are cast as demons before any investigation is complete. Where were all the bleeding hearts when Pc PERSAD was killed? No one marched in support of his family against the criminals that shot him. Where do we all think that criminals come from. They are some of the people we grew up with, our neighbours or even members of our family! If the police used too much force, then they should face the consequences of their actions but to embark on this course of action at this time is downright stupid.

I kind of agree with you Spence, in that particular case I think the family may be in denial. After all, we see the news every day and when criminals are gunned down it is usually the family who comes to the defense saying their relative was a good man. However, I repeat a full investigation should take place because even if these people were criminals we have to find out if they fired the officer FIRST or the police took the law upon themselves and killed them on the spot.

I wonder what Spence and all those who defend police officers all the time have to say about this case. I'm sure they will say they switched the bags or something like that. rolleyes.gif

Alleged Bad And Controversial Police Officers

According to the Express, the police killings are on the rise. It seems also the people aren't taking it lightly at all.

international QUOTE
There have been no death row hangings since 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago, the convicts protected by layers of legal loopholes that have taken them past the Privy Council-decreed five-year limit for the noose.

In the meantime, there is evidence that some police officers have anointed themselves judge, jury and executioner in an alarming number of cases, in which those killed are, most times, guilty of far less than a capital offence.

Between 2000 and 2011, including up two weeks ago when police killed three people in Moruga, officers have killed 256 people in Trinidad and Tobago (actually, only three are from Tobago).

Five of the dead were women, one a 17-year-old.

And according to the statistics provided by the Crime and Problem Analysis (CAPA) department of the Police Service, the number of extrajudicial killings has increased consistently over the past decade. Source 4
