What is the position of Mormons on "Going Green"?

Depends ultimately on the politics of the Mormon.
The Doctrine of the Church however declares that the Earth has a Spirit (which is the spirit world where the dead reside) and will die and be resurrected sometime after Christ returns (a new Heaven and new Earth).

So I suppose it is the responsibility of a member of the Church to be a good stewards of the Earth as it will be the ultimate abode of Righteous Saints who have been redeemed by the Blood of Christ.

I personally feel that the Earth was created for man to sustain him in this Mortal world, but that we should do our best to use it wisely. As Adam tilled the ground when he left the garden, we also must till the ground (figuratively I suppose as most of us do not grow our own food).

Personally I believe that the Earth was was made for our sakes, and not the other way around.

Yes I agree it is our source for energy to live in this world. Is the relationship truly one way though as if we do not tend to the land then the land will spoil and cause us to rot and die.

Where does our accountability to the survival out the race lie? After all we are to multiply and build a large community devoted to his ways.

I do not think it means you are green but you are accountable to your offspring.

Does any one see the idea of being green different for Mormons then any other Christian? I personally do not.

There should no problem with clean air and water etc. But I think much of the extreme environmentalism you see today as well as the scramble to call oneself "green" is contrary to gospel principles. For example:

D&C 104:17

There are two concepts here which the environmentalist movement often runs up against. One, is the the simple use of resources; any resources. They are for us to use. And two is the removal of agency. Environmentalists often go well beyond managing resources to the outright exclusion of their use or taking away people's rights to govern themselves.

"Climategate" is a prime example of this last where power was to be given to the UN and other organizations under false pretenses.

Environmentalists also often seem to be one issue voters and don't consider the effect of a candidate's position on other issues and this is essentially a vote to remove our freedoms as well.

This whole green thing is largely a scam but I can see a lot of Mormons buying into it because they tend to fall for scams. If you doubt me just look at the statistics for fraud and people buying into pyramid schemes in Utah.

I do not think that the green issue is a scam. (How ironic it is we are having this discussion with what is happening in the gulf.) My friend is finishing his PhD at BYU in biology. He said that the church is allowing their department to start an awareness campaign about global warming. He said it is there and the evidence shows it. His research in the Utah dessert is showing how things are changing so fast there.
As he said it is not a matter that the world is warming, the question is why? That can be debated. But like he said if a person came to you and said your house is on fire, would you not at least go an look? The same with the environment would you not at least look and try to conserve just in case they are right? What do we have to loose? pollution, healthier food?

As for the world, I do not think that global warming hurts the world. The world is resilient it will change, and evolve and adapt. Rather global warming and our ways hurts us. We are the ones what will suffer, the world and life will continue. It always has. So I look at environmentalism as a way to make and improve our lives more then anything. As Dbacker said, the world has a spirit, that makes it living, so do we have a moral obligation to the living? or to intelligence? I think so.

I think this is one of those issues where social pressure as well as "fashion" comes to play. Everything is about going "green".
