In a major turnaround from past decades, a majority of Americans support legalizing marijuana, according to a new CNN/ORC poll.
Fifty-five percent of those questioned say marijuana should be made legal, with 44% disagreeing.
According to the CNN poll and numbers from General Social Survey polling, support for legalizing marijuana has soared over the past quarter century, from 16% in 1987 to 26% in 1996, 34% in 2002, and 43% in 2012.
There are big differences according to age, region, party ID, and gender, with senior citizens, Republicans and Southerners the only major demographic groups who still oppose the legal use of pot.
The poll, conducted January 3 to 5, also indicates that the number of people who say that smoking pot is morally wrong has plunged. Ref. CNN
Lower opioid overdose death rates associated with state medical marijuana laws:
States that implemented medical marijuana laws appear to have lower annual opioid analgesic overdoses death rates (Both from prescription pain killers and illicit drugs such as heroin) than states without such laws although the reason why is not clear. Ref. Source 9
I believe drugs should be legal. Whether the drugs are legal or illegal makes little difference whether or not the drug is actually consumed. If someone wants a drug bad enough, then he will find a way to get it. Having the drug illegal won't stop the person. It will simply cause the person to take more drastic measures to get the drug--like robbing a bank to pay for the high prices of obtaining the drug from a black market or simply murdering someone who has the drug.
Remember USA's Prohibition of alcohol from 1920 to 1933 and how well that turned out? The black market mobster suppliers were literally shooting at each other to kill off the completion in an attempt to get rich as the only supplier of alcoholic drinks.
Illegal drugs create profit for gangs, mobs, and drug cartels. Personally, I'd rather the drugs were sold at retailers with a 1000% sales tax, and have the profit be used toward a good cause like charity than to have the drug money make criminals wealthy.
