I was reading in the local newspaper today about a 17 year old football player from Hartford, Conn. He stumbled upon a black bear while searching for the family dogs. He said that he stuck his head into a patch of brush and found the bear staring back at him. He actually scuffled with the bear before freeing himself. He was lucky to only get some scratches and welts. I think he was lucky. I know I don't know if I can fight a bear. I may just try and run for my life...lol
Would you actually tangle with a bear? Or would you just try and run away?
I would run as fast as my little legs would carry me! lol
but if he got caught by the bear and had to fight to free himself then he had to try something, fight him or maybe try to outsmart so then you can leg it when you're free!
he was very lucky to escape, he could have ended up alot worse.

I suppose my opinion is worthless in this matter, but I felt like answering anyway. Let's be kind and assume it's a 100 to 150 pound black bear, and it's not a female defending cubs. I know the most sensitive and vulnerable area is the bear's eyes. The bear will probably try to overbear me (No pun intended), but will soon try to engage its teeth in the attack. At any point that I'm able I have to try and drive my fingers or thumbs as deeply into its eye sockets as possible.
If I'm able to put its eyes out, I may live but need a couple hundred stitches.
If the bear were a grizzly or polar bear of 200 pounds or more (and that's a very small weight for a grizzly or polar bear), I doubt I'd have a chance. I would probably lose my eyes before I could try the same maneuver against it, as it would probably bite my face off.
I have read that the worse thing one can do is run. That sets off an instinct in the bear to chase you down as prey. The bear will definately outrun you. I read you should lay down in the fetal position protecting your vital organs and play dead. I am not sure I would be brave enough to do that though. I would probably run too, which means I would probably die!
Black bears are the smaller of the bears. Like Jeff said if it was a female with cubs the guy would have ended up in far worse condition. We had a female with two cubs that used our yard as their playground.
One summer day I had baked a salmon for dinner, and that night we went to bed with all the windows open. I woke up and thought I saw the bear coming through the window. I grabbed the blankets and brought them up over my head. (like that would protect me)
My husband then waved his arms and yelled, I screamed and then what he yelled finally got through to me. He wanted me to get the gun. Get the gun?? I pulled the blankets off my head and looked at the window again. It was my husband, he was waving his arms and yelling, I asked him what was he doing? He said that bear is trying to get in, get the gun so I can shoot her!
I started laughing, shoot her, with the 25 semi-automatic! It's a little pea shooter! You'll just piss her off and she will definitely get in. I went and got the bottle of ammonia window spray and sprayed her in the face good.
There is no way I would be able to fight or run from a black bear. I would have to scare it off. I only hope my screams would be louder than that night two decades ago!!!

where did you live that they have bears around? Now, is the instict of a bear to just attack a human? |
