is chernobyl proportions similar to biblical proporions in any way and how |
The Chernobyl tragedy occurred in April of 1986, which makes this year the twentieth year anniversary of the accident. I was nine years old when it happened and barely remember the events unfolding. Reading through Elena's Chernobyl journal, I was very disturbed to see that nuclear officials are still trying to play down the amount of loses. Despite the near nineteen miles of effected land, only fifty some deaths are now counted officially as caused by Chernobyl. The reason for this is that with rising oil prices, people are again looking to nuclear energy for power and the less negative accidents look, the better. Read the latest in her journal here.

Here are some quick facts regarding Chernobyl:
The Accident
* The Chernobyl power plant is located on the border area between Ukraine and Belarus.
* The explosion of the reactor at Chernobyl released 100 times more radiation than the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. (1)
* At the time of the accident, about 7 million people lived in contaminated territories, including 3 million children.
* About 5.5 million people - including more than a million children - continue to live in contaminated zones. (2)

Chernobyl is getting a face-lift that will last for 100 years. Looks like they finally have a plan to deal with the hastily installed sarcophagus and is to be completed by 2012. Also of note in the article is a plan to remove the spend nuclear fuel in the next 50 years:

There has been a update to the site that was initially mentioned in this thread and a afterword that is worth reading. The update are photos from a 2008 visit to a nearby town.

The amount of radioactive fuel still present there is mind boggling and frightening to know that it still could be released by a natural disaster back into the eco-system.
I think we can learn a lot about what happened at Chernobyl. We can look at our signature on the earth and see how quickly mother nature can take it back. We can see how quickly nature takes care of the radiation. We see that the roads do not hold it but the buildings do. How long before all the wooden structures are no more? I know they have plans for the area but how long is it going to be before it is safe to walk around there without the use of radiation measuring systems?
In my last post, you can see that the motorcycle woman went back in 2008 and if she gets much off of the roads the radioactivity is still above the limits for humans. I wouldnt want to be anywhere around or downwind of that place!
I know that it it is still higher than what is safe for humans but we are very fragile beings. The plants are growing and slowly taking back the area. I would be interested in how the plant life is dealing with the radiation and what animal life has adopted to the area and what changes they have made to be in a radiated area.
