Sister and Brothers Dress Properly

How tired of you seeing someone dress inappropriately for Church? It is a real distraction, especially if it is sexual in nature. 'Sexual'? Yes, because there are two types of 'bad' dressers.
The first kind are the ones that wear mini-skirts, sleeve less, tank tops, bikinis, etc.
The other type is the one that wears a yellow shirt and pink tie and expects to pass the sacrament. Or wears a jeans and a jersey to go to the temple.

I hear you JB. I think is a big problem in the Church here in TT.  You know, most of the girls want to be with one foot in the world and the other foot in the Church and it's sad to say but it just do not work like that....
Hopefully one day they will hear the words of the Prophets regards to the way a virtuous young girl and women should dress. Now, let's clarify that the Church doesn't want women to dress like nuns. I think we can still being fashionable and keep our standards. What the need of showing off 'everything' God has give you????.
Plus, what example are we given to other women in the Church? that is okay to dress like that??!!!

I agree!  Although most of the members of our ward dress appropriately, we sometimes see some of the younger women in something kind of wild.  We are in a sort of "poor" area, and I know some of the families have a hard time financially.  So sometimes when I see a person dressed... how do you say it politely?  Less than "church standard" ...  women wearing slacks, young men in jeans and t-shirts ...  I have to give them the benefit of the doubt.  Also, sometimes new converts, especially those having hard times with money, they just don't have the clothes to wear.

But the younger women raised in the church, especially the young married women, should know better.

I think there is a big difference of someone dressing because they cannot afford proper clothing than those who dress not according to the standards of the Church. Yes, I'm talking about those mini skirts or tight clothing, usually those clothing are in 'fashion' now and that's why mostly our youth wear it.
Yes, I agree with you Farseer about the new converts but usually they get the message when they start seeing how people go to dress at Church. Also for those who cannot afford clothing (Church clothing specially) our Church have welfare centers all around the States where there are used and decent clothing available for members, white shirts and ties and pants and all!!! sometimes you even find new stuff in there. smile.gif

With the vast ammounts of resources made available through the church welfare system and the Relief Society, the only viable excuse that I have discovered is a lack of knowledge...

I have a good Friend who is a convert, his wife also is a convert. When they joined the church she wore slacks, no body told her any different, they were members for almost a year before someone said anything...

The other reasons I have found are useless and these people need to get their heads examined... One brother (a member of our EQ presidency) just "does't feel" that a white shirt allows him the "agency" to express himself...

Several of the young men have outrageous harcuts and styles, the young women dying their hair and wearing denim skirts and sleavless shirts...

I think it would be a good idea for the Bishops or Stake Presidents to give a talk in every ward regarding the appropriateness of dress and teach that even when we are not in the church we should dress with a modicum of decorum and cover any areas that would be covered by garments - even if you haven't recieved your endowments... Modesty should be the watch word... President Young enstated a "Retrenchment Society" as the women of his day needed to retrench in dress and speech... today it should be re-enacted but for both men and women....

Just my two cents...

Having served in the position of giving talks in sacrament meeting most of the time I have found that no matter how much you say it there are those that just choose to do it anyway. It amazes me still.

locally in t&t the dress standards are average but what gets me angry is that long standing members who have been to the temple, who have served missions dress not in accordance with church standards.when the new members come to church and see the older members dress code they think its okay to dress immodeste.in this day and age where the fashion houses of the world have such an influence onyoung people and adults it is a big challenge but our local leaders must be more bold from the pulpit.elder neal a maxwell said"a society that permits anything will eventually lose everything"

It happened to me! When I join the Church (when I was around 12) I wore dress pants to Church and nobody told me anything! Like a year after some young women very nicely told me I should wear dresses or skirts. And from that day I start wearing skirts to Church now some members said that the people should get a clue when they see other dressing in a certain manner, that may be true, but when you're a new member and do not know anything about the Church you think that everybody goes to Church dressing like they want, particularly I never payed attention to that until someone make a mention about it to me. It seems like people are afraid to hurt the feelings of some people, but if you do it in a loving manner they will be grateful for it wink.gif oh well...some they will be grateful :smile.gif

Wanlorn, you're so right but I have been in the Church for 16 years and I have seen this problem in the three countries I have live in. And no matter what you say (to the youth and married ladies particularly) they choose to not listen. What else you can do? :smile.gif What else you can do when the Young Women leaders or RS leaders themselves dress not according to Church Standards?? :smile.gif
