Radio Frequency Identifier
A Radio Frequency Identifier allows someone to track a thing or person. It is a very small chip that can be inserted under the skin or attached to something. Then the person with a tracking device can know your location at any given time.
Recently, the government of Trinidad & Tobago has expressed interest in using the RFIDs to track / locate persons or vehicles.
The question here is:
Do you think this is something T&T should go for? Is there room for abuse?
I assume this is being looked at in T&T because of the problems with kidnapping. For that purpose, I think it is a good idea, so long as it is affordable, and not only intended for those who are upper-class or have enough money to purchase it. As for abuse, the only ones who can abuse it are the ones who are responsible for tracking, and for abuse to not occur, the service would need to be heavily regulated by the local goverment to ensure that checks and balances are in place for privacy, etc. I doubt that this type of mechanism will be made available to everyone, and therefore it will just become another commodity that wealthy people can only benefit from. In my opinion, if that is the case then the government should not be involved at all, and simply let those who can afford it use it at their own risk.
Well I assume that 'tracking' will be done either by a private corporation or the government. It's not like people would be able to track each other. In that case you would only have to worry about either the private company or government officials abusing their authority to track local citizens. eg, a government official getting paid to track someone they should not be tracking, etc.
It will be managed by both I believe. There will be the government / special forces tracking and then the private entity, but as in all things there is room for bribe and therefore in my opinion a small network will be formed for 'extra' activities.

Comments: This will be good for them criminals when they on probation and suspects who might jump the country when they have a criminal case coming up.
Maybe they should secretly attach this to all those gang members to keep track of what they're doing and where they are located.
