Testing The Book Of Mormon

Testing the Book of Mormon

"When the missionaries came to our home, I had the desire to listen to the message of the Restoration of the gospel. My motivation was mainly curiosity. Attending church, I heard more new spiritual knowledge. It was interesting and I liked it, but I was missing the essential: giving heed. I had to build a personal spiritual foundation upon the living reality of Christ and the confirmation that Joseph Smith was the prophet of the Restoration. That confirmation came only when I gave heed and tested my beginning faith in the Book of Mormon, the physical evidence of modern revelation."

QUOTE

That is a really interesting concept. We are working with an investigator right now and she has been asking about signs or witnesses. We are trying to teach her about having Faith, or at least a desire and how we should not ask God for signs. But within this quote it shows that as we have faith and act on that faith--then comes the answers.

It struck me that I don't know if she believes that the Book of Mormon is physical evidence of modern revelation. She doesn't criticize the Book of Mormon, she just has not acted much by reading and praying about it.

Comments: There are some things about the Book of Mormon that I will like to know. For instance Isaiah is quoted throughout the book of Mormon. If we were to assume that Joseph Smith was actually translating Reformed Egyptian from Gold Plates through the power of God, then we should expect that any translational errors found in the King James Version of the Bible would not be found in the Book of Mormon when it quotes Isaiah.

For example, the King James translators made translational errors when translating Isaiah 53.

Isaiah 53 is quoted in Mosiah 14, and therefore, if Joseph Smith were truly translating the scriptures through the power of God, and not simply copying down the text from his King James Bible, then all the translational errors found in the KJV should be nonexistent in the Book of Mormon but this is not the case. Here is an example:

international QUOTE (Isaiah 53:5 of the KJV)
"...he was bruised for our iniquities."

However, there is a mistake with this translation. The word "bruised" was translated from the Hebrew word "Hadar" which means "to be completely crushed, broken," not simply bruised. The Hebrew word for bruise is "shuwf." Nevertheless, the same translational error is found in Mosiah 14:5.

That is just one of more examples like this.

Of the thousands of words in the entire Book of Mormon you chose to focus on just one word from the translation to try and disprove it?

I wonder how the "read and pray about it" statement will work for other sacred religious books, like the Quran (Koran), or the sacred books of the Hindu, Buddhists, Scientogy, etc"¦
Here is a question, have you read any other sacred book, and prayed to know whether or not it is of God? If not, just realize that that is what you are asking your investigator to do.

I think there is a big expectation for people to blindly believe in the BOM without providing any evidence whatsoever, and when the person doesn't wish to entertain the thought of "just have faith" is looked upon as as apostate or sign seeker. People, there are many people out there with a brain, and just praying about it isn't going to help.

Comments: Why do Mormons try to prove the Book of Mormon if it is "spiritually' true?
