Question About Temple Ordinances

I'm new to the church, I've only been a member since August, and I'm getting ready to get my first temple recommend to go perform baptisms for the dead. However, I was wondering about the other temple ordinances and why they are necessary. I understand that endowments and sealings are very sacred and specifics about them cannot be discussed, but I was wondering where it was mentioned in the scriptures where some of the ordinances were necessary. Are there any scriptures that give referency to why we should be endowed and why (or if) we have to be endowed to gain celestial glory? I'm not saying that they're not necessary, I just don't know much about them and wanted to find out as much info as I could about them. I'm sure I'll understand better after I go through the ordinances myself, Satan has just been getting to me lately about the temple since I'm so close to being able to visit one for the first time. Ordinances Temple Question

There are several scriptures in the Doctrine and Covenants. I suggest you attend a Temple Preparation class. If your ward doesn't regularly have them, ask your Bishop to arrange one for you. It can be held during Sunday school with many others attending or it can be one on one with you and a ward missionary (not the elders). This will give you much more insight into what you need to know and why you should go.

Ordinances Temple Question

Tena instructed you well... I say the first thing to do is go to a temple preparation class, talk to someone you feel comfortable with who has already been in the temple, and lastly spiritually prepare - read the scriptures, over and over, fast and pray so that you can be an open channel for the Lord's Spirit to inspire you with knowledge, understanding and appreciation when you enter the Lord's House.

Moo, I wish you the best in your first trip to the Temple. The first time I made baptisms for the dead was when I was 12 years old and it was the most important moment in my life, I will never forget that. Please make sure when you go to the Temple to talk with the Brother who perform the baptisms, explain him that it is your first time so if he can please say the words as slowly as possible so you can enjoy each one of those baptisms. My first time I did like 60 something baptisms...one after another...oh gosh, it was really tirening!!!! :-->

Question About Temple Ordinances

First of all, congratulations on your own baptism! What a wonderful event in your life, to be cleansed from sin and receive the Holy Ghost! The significance of those things should be uppermost in your mind as you perform baptisms vicariously for people who did not have the chance to be baptized in their mortal lives. The temple is a beautiful, sacred place -- it is great that you are moving so forward in your spiritual progression that you are able to attend and serve in that capacity.

This spiritual progression is also what the endowment is about, learning more about the plan of salvation and our purpose in life and beyond this life. How can we progress if we do not learn? And it then follows that if we do not progress, how can we expect eternal glory? We also make more covenants with God as we participate in the endowment, which binds Him to bless us when we keep our part of those covenants. It's a responsiblity and a great joy to be endowed.

I wish you all the best with your first trip to the temple -- and with your future progression toward your endowment.

I second all that the others have written. I would only add one thing. When you are IN the temple for your own endowments, ASK QUESTIONS!

Afterwards, ponder what you have learned, study a lot more, then make an appointment to meet with the Temple President, if possible, and ASK MORE QUESTIONS!

Keep doing this (I haven't, and have had to learn things the much harder way). But, in the near future, I hope to be able to go back to the temple, and I will certainly be asking those questions!

The endowment really is a true endowment of spiritual power. As you begin to understand it, you will be able to use what you learn to literally open up the eternities to your gaze, and learn directly from the Father, Jesus, and the angels, for yourself.

Congratulations on your own baptism and the opportunity to perform baptisms for the dead. It truly is one of the greatest opportunities for service.
