Following Those Whom God Has Chosen to Preside
My wife and I use FHE to study these lessons, that way we are prepared far in advanced, more especially too, because we have to teach it.
Most of the chapter seems to cover sustaining the Prophet, although there is some emphasis on sustaining local leaders it is not emphasized. We noticed that the Church has placed more focus on following the Prophet than local leadership, this may be due to the fast paced way in which the Church is growing and the lack of 'strong' local leadership that really know what they are doing, but that is just my opinion.
In sustaining local leaders we found that one of the best ways to do this is actually to be worthy, since we cannot receive any calls to help the leaders with their work, if we are not worthy.
Goods points JB. I look forward teaching that lesson in Relief Society. Reading the lessons and other ones by Pres. Grant he seems like he was a very stubborn type of man *giggles*. I think another thing in order to sustain our leaders is praying for them and make ourselves available when they need you for an assignment. Also magnifying our callings are also another way in helping them in their labors,
An example given in my RS class was of never speaking badly of any church adult in the presence of your children. Since, for the most part, all adults who are active in the Church have a calling of some kind, when our children hear us speak negatively about them, we are not really sustaining them in their callings.
This one sister says she never heard her parents ever complain about any member in Church, particularly about how they were fulfilling their responsibilities in their callings. It is possible her parents spoke of these issues among themselves, but they never did it in front of their young, impressionable children. What their children learned was that mom and dad truly sustained these people in their callings.
