We know from the scriptures that Pilate, a Roman Proctor, was in charge of the Jews during the time Christ and Barabas came before him. The rest is history. Many skeptics wondered if there really was a Pontius Pilate until evidence was found through the inscription on a block of limestone, which was found at Caesarea in 1961. So we know he existed, but what happened after his washing of hands still dirty?
There are several theories:
1. He went back to Rome and killed himself.
2. He was banished by the new Ceasar.
3. He eventually became a Christian

A few years ago, i was listeming to the late night radio program Coast to Coast with Art Bell. His guest was a man by the name of Glenn Kimball. I think he may be LDS but I am not sure but he has written a book titled, "Hidden Stories of the Childhood of Jesus". He also wrote about the crucifiction and more details on men like Pilate. He said that Christ appeared to Pilate and 500 soldiers after his resurrection and Pilate did convert to Christianity. He gets his information from ancient manuscripts. Here is a link, with further information. This link is actually a few years old.

The there is the teaching, if the Sonnini Manucsript is genuine (evidence suggests it is, but we do not know for sure), that Pilate committed suicide:
"Verse 18: And after much preaching and toil Paul and his fellow labourers passed into Helvetia, and came unto Mount Pontius Pilate, where he who condemned the Lord Jesus dashed himself down headlong, and so miserably perished.
Verse 19: And immediately a torrent gushed out of the mountain and washed his body broken in pieces into a lake.
Verse 20: And Paul stretched forth his hands upon the water, and prayed unto the Lord, saying, O Lord God give a sign unto all nations that here Pontius Pilate, which condemned thine only-begotten Son, plunged down headlong into the pit."
