I once did this when I returned from my mission. It had its fun moments, but salary wise it is nothing to live off of. What gets you by is tips! Now this is if you work in the front staff. If you are behind the scenes (cook or assistant) then you are in for long days and nights with not much pay (Trinidad).
As far as being a restaurant owner, I never was, but I have been around them quite a bit. Most of them complain about the wastage of food and the amount of time it takes to deal with the facility, customers and employees, but all in all you can make a lot of money if your meals are well prepared and your service timely.
I work as a waitress during the summer and during school breaks. It's a stressful job and you pretty much have to act and cater to everyone's needs. The days can be long on your feet, but I enjoy it because it's a job where I'm busy pretty much all the time. I hate being bored at work, I think it's a waste of my time and my employer's money. I usually make $10-12 per hour in tips because at my restaurant we have a very fast table turnover, so customers come and go all the time. I recommend food services to those who are willing work hard and to smile even when they are unhappy.
