If someone were to take a picture in the nude it is considered pornography. If a professional photographer takes the same picture then it is considered artistic nude and if an artist were to paint or sculpt the same pose then it would be considered art. What do you think about art in the nude? It seems that if it is more than 200 years old then it is okay, but anything in modern days is considered bad. How do you look at it?

I have to see the piece of art in order to judge it. Our bodies are beautiful and nothing to be ashamed of but what artists call 'artistic nude' nowdays it is nothing but nudity, NOT art involved.

There's a huge difference between artistic nudity and pornographic nudity. I don't think that all nude photos today are pornographic. I saw a nude photo in my running magazine that didn't show any of the key body parts but instead showcased this particular runner's powerful body. It was a very beautiful photograph to me, although some found it offensive.

I think anything that is meant to show the beauty and power of a person's body is art. Anything that shows a person's body in a way that is meant to excite a person sexually is porn. IMO.

That is very hard to determine since it may take very little to excite a person. For instance, and this is a very basic example... if you were to take a medical picture of a naked woman and flash it to a group of people without explaining that it is a medical image then they would be shocked! The shock may contain various feelings. After you explain the pic some may still take it in the wrong way.

This is a good point although I see that modern art is expressing nudity more boldly than ever, so age does not seem to matter.

I think it all depends with what purpose is being intended. When I see a nude sculpture, I think about art and I'm not shocked at it but instead if I see a picture of a naked woman then definetly I would be shocked.

As for art, it's all "in the eye of the beholder" in my opinion. Some people can make porn out of anything, no matter how innocent, beautiful, or sacred that thing may be.

Porn is really easy to spot, especially these days. Just advertising in these modern times has become pornographic -- have you seen the ads all over the 'net for lingerie, dieting aids, sports, cars -- you name it, almost everything has some type of base sexual connotation. It's horrible.

Art has it's own place culturally -- there are some beautiful sculptures of nudes that I don't believe were intended to be in any way shocking or sexual in context -- they were created to honor the human body in a state of perfection. However, we have become a people so attuned to sexual things that it is difficult for some to separate that from their consciousness. Some literally cannot look upon *any* naked flesh, in any form, without become aroused. It's a very sad, and scary, commentary on our world today.

    In my opinion, of course.

I understand your opinion Farseer, but I am not sure exactly where you stand and have to ask, so what do we do? Do we create a nude sculpture in the hope that only those who have the right thoughts look at it?

It didn't occur to me that "we" could "do" anything about it -- I don't think there is a solution to this question. There will always be art, in one form or another, and there will always be the "low" side of life. We cannot prevent either one. We can only do as our own consciences dictate.

    IMO
