Okay, to express in other terms what I am getting at... would you feel comfortable if a nude art project was being done...
1. At your 6 year old's school
2. By your Bishop or pastoral minister?
3. By your mother to display in the home
No, I wouldn't feel comfortable with any of those situations. However, those are things I can actually do something about. I cannot control the World at Large, nor how people respond to "art."
When we went to visit one of my daughter's young friends for a birthday party, the decor in their family home includes nude and partially nude female sculptures - one in the living room and one in the bathroom. And they have two young daughters! I didn't notice them at first -- in the living room it is under a table, so is not obvious, and the bathroom, well.. -- but when I realized it, I took my daughter home. I explained to our hostess what my reasons were, and she looked at me like I was crazy. My daughter was so upset -- to miss that birthday party!! She was 4 I think. I did not explain it to her at the time, because she was too young to understand. And of course we have not been invited back, nor would we go if invited.
This is an instance where I can "do" something. Art has it's place in the world, and I have my agency to deal with it in my sphere of influence.

The one in the living room was a female with very detailed bared breasts and a flowing garment of some kind from below the navel. The bathroom statue was completely nude, with flowers and vines draped over it, but not hiding anything. I don't think it's appropriate in a "family" home. If the parents wanted to have something like that in the privacy of their bedroom, fine -- but in plain view of a group of kids at a birthday party? Their own two small children exposed to it every day, so that they grow up thinking it's okay to be naked all the time? Completely inappropriate, in my opinion, and yes, we left.
Message Edited! MrSmith: User Talduras, this board is not about Games. Use offtopic tags when going on a variant |
Offtopic but, There are 3 games (two of them T rated) that didn't mention nudity on the label, even though it had it. These are Wizardry 8, Baldur's Gate 2 (expansion), and Diablo. If anyone has comments on that, feel free to post now. Most of those games are now on my "stay away" list, and future purchases of any games I'm going to research to the bone! Too bad I'm too chicken to sell them online. Edit: Oh yes. I've said it before and I'll say it again. ESRB needs to redo their rating methods, and there may be other countries that need their rating methods updated too. What they do now is have the publishers send them a tape and manuscript of stuff in the game. Basically, this makes it self-censorship, in a way, and most people are just not capable of doing that correctly. |
I am very artistic, but I can remember when I was 12 and I stashed national geographic magazines and anything haveing any old paintings in it. Even sears underwaer catalogs. I may in fact be a little abnormal in these areas. If I were a parent I wouldnt make a big deal about it, but I would try to redirect the kid to something more productive. Now I did have photographs of all Kinds of beutiful women of every shape, size and color around my house. And I do see the artistic side of such a beutiful shape. You have to wonder why it is so beutiful? Let me tell you it isnt all artistic. And if my nephew, niece or mom ever came over I would run around the house takeing everything down. I think it is more of a mature thing. But I would trust someone that had everything out in the open as apposed to someone who didnt. However most of my photographs have been burned by my girlfriend and I have been scolded for it. The other side is that it might be alright for you, but it might be very insulting to someone else. She always looked on the wall and asked if she was preatier than that thing. Being jelous of a photograph? The only thing I can have on my wall now is a picture of a violen. Think about the shape of a violin. I collect coke bottles too. It all goes back to sexual. That is best left to pivacy. Me and my girlfriend havent done anything??? But she is right about alot of that stuff. I really do want this one. I thought it was all an expression of art. Out of 32 photographs I have 1 left?? Doesnt sound very artistic to me.
Hmmm. This is my first post in response to a topic and I have no idea if it will actually get seen cause I feel like I'm on a different planet.
I think there is a fine line- but big difference- between being naked and being in the nude. Most of it is left up to the viewer to determine how he or she defines the situation. A case in point, I remember once in figure drawing class a male student could not get over his shock when the model dropped her robe and assumeda pose. He was visibly red and uncomfortable for the entire session- and that was the last we ever saw of him again. Obviously, all he saw was a naked woman in all her glory. While I acknowledged that, I could also see the lines, forms, shadows, the mood etc.
I think the human body is the most beautiful and expressive means of getting ideas and issues across and I rely on it heavily in my work.
As far as pornography is concerned, I think it is somewhat easier to tell when it is, because of the intended purpose or use of the image. At least this is my take on the situation. With art- all aspects, be it painting, sculpture etc. - somehow I think the artist is able to portray the image without it appearing to be "exposed" or vulnerable. Rather, the image appears to set a mood, or be based on a theme or idea- something that goes deeper and beyond the realm of the physical.
Of course- it's still up to the viewer and his/ her interpretation - and in reality that is what art is al about- how you perceive things.
In my opinion nudity in sculpture was the way the old masters viewed it. Leonardo da Vinci was engulfed with perfection so was Michelangelo's sistine work including his David, likewise with Donatello. But nudity that sprung from Gaugain & Manet even up until now is viewed differently. I can't explain it but I preferred the works of yester year
