Ok, now I have been experimenting with this, and trying to do this the cheapest way possible, just because I don't know if I want to keep it... but I am looking to make a webserver to host my own pages.... but I need a DNS host that actually works, other ones that I have been using doesn't work.. ie: www.no-ip.com I was just wondering if anyone has any advice/experience on this issue.
Unfortunately I do not believe that our topic holder is here to benefit from this information however there may be someone else out there that may want to give this a shot one day....
To create a web server you must first have a constant internet connection in which your ISP grants you a static (never changing) IP Address. For your DNS service you must register with a domain registrar such as godaddy, internic, or any of the millions of others to grant you the name space you are going to use for your site. Through your registrar now you must point the DNS records for your domain name to the IP Address assigned to you by your ISP. Now you are ready to build and install your web server. You have several options here. The cheaper way is to find an older copy of Red Hat Linux that someone is selling on e-bay for an OS. If you want ease of install and administration you may look at investing in Windows 2003 web server addition. This is different from the windows standard server addition in 2003 unlike with Windows 2000. Once you have your server installed with an OS and ready to go, you can load on Linux a version of Apache web server (recommended) or you can search good for some good free versions that are now that have few options in them. On Windows you will start up your IIS server. At this time you are ready to configure your software to point to the directory in which you have your web site saved and set your default or index page. DNS takes hours to replicate over the internet from the server that you registered your IP address at so be patient for a day or two and give it time before you tell very many people to check out your new web site. I will be happy to answer any questions on this here also.
