U.S. Military forces have conducted an operation in Somalia "Against the Al-Shabaab network," A Pentagon spokesman tells CNN's Barbara Starr.
"We are assessing the results of the operation and will provide additional information as and when appropriate" Rear Adm. John Kirby said.
Twice before in the past year, the United States has targeted Al-Shabaab leaders in Somalia. Al-Shabaab, designated a terrorist organization by the United States, has a relationship with al Qaeda that goes back several years. In 2012 the two groups effectively merged, according to CNN national security analyst Peter Bergen. Ref. CNN

The notice to NGOs comes a month after President Trump declared portions of the country an "Area of active hostilities," giving the military wider scope to launch strikes that could potentially kill more civilians. Ref. Source 6e.
Somalia is a bad place. It's one of the most dangerous places in the world. Warring factions use starvation as a weapon. And they are barely a country. There are tremendous numbers of Islamic terrorists located there. Many are Hell bent on hurting the US, our interests, and our allies. Striking them there so they don't have a safe haven is smart tactically, but we certainly shouldn't go there with the intent of nation building. Been there, done that, doesn't work.
