Diego Maradona - Page 3

How much do you know about the Busy Babes ? Not a lot by the sounds of it . Duncan Edwards would have been a more complete player than Maradona if he had lived.
As far diving, the majority of diving in English Football is done by the foreign players not by the English players.
I agree that Argentina normally have a better football side than England so why resort to cheating to beat us.
The point I was trying to make is that Pele is a better footballer than Maradona and as such he would have owned up to the handball goal.
Surely Maradona would thave been better thought of if he had admitted he had cheated instaed of coming out with the Hand of God rubbish.
I notice you make no comment about the referee. I repeat that if the match had been played in Europe the goal would not have been allowed

The fact that you are even comparing the Busby Babes to Maradona would suggest you"re a Manchester United fan.

The only Busby Babe that can compare to the feats of Maradona and what he did in the game of football is Sir Bobby Charlton, arguably England's finest. Charlton certainly had some qualities that Maradona didn't, but on balance Diego was a more brilliant player on his day. However, I will concede that I am a huge fan of Charlton, I have seen a lot of footage of him before and he is a great.

Edwards was a talented 21 year old when he tragically died, but how can you even compare him to Maradona?

If you honestly believe that English players don't dive you ought to watch more Premier League, they are just as culpable as the others. You make Maradona sound like he has committed a crime, when in truth he didn't get caught for cheating. Players deliberately dive all the time today to milk penalties (cheap goals) and you don't seem to have a problem with this?

There is no difference between a hand of god and someone who dives to secure a penalty.

I agree that Pele is better, but I disagree with your assessment of the Argentine. Would Pele have used his hand to score a goal in that situation? I hope not, but I guess we will never know.

As for the refs performance, personally I don't think it would have made a difference to the result. Argentina was up 2-0 before England pulled one back. Had they been up 1-0 they would shut-up shop. Furthermore you suggest the ref was biased or it wouldn't have happened in Europe. The referee was Tunisian. Had he been officiating in Europe what difference would it have made? You have to look at who the better team was, and in my opinion, it was Argentina. I think they proved this by going on to win the Cup.

I am not a Man Untd fan. I only mentioned the Busby babes in reply to the previous posting stating England had nobody compared to Maradona since then. With that sort of statement you are all clearly anti-english football
Clearly you all have a inflated opinion of Maradona. So I will bow out of this discussion and leave you to it.

Tell me an English player who cheats like Drogba ?

Roker, I don't think anyone here has defamed English football or their players. If anything, you are the one who has been determined to make Maradona out as the worst player ever in the history of football. I have spoken with many English fans, and a lot of them admit that regardless of the 'Hand of God' Maradona schooled the English team single-handedly in that game. A lot of them also admit that he is one of the best players to play the game. No matter how much you despise the guy, you have to give him his due.

My favourite team in the whole world of any sport is Liverpool FC. has been since I was 8 years old, so please don't tell me I'm anti-English. We are talking about Maradona as a player.

The mere fact you think the Busby babes were better than Maradona tells me your either biased, bitter or you don't know much about the game.

I think there are some great English players, but the Argentine is widely regarded as the second best in history. That's not just my opinion but a general consensus from most football minds in the world.

You mentioned the busby babes...not me. You are too young to know about the Busy Babes so how can you pass comment on them. It seems I being criticised for my comments on the Busy Babes ...when I only mentioned them in reply to an earlier post.
I agree Maradona was a great player...just not the greatest.
I also agree Argentina had a great team....but to be truly great they would have won a World Cup when it was played in Europe.
I am a season ticket holder at a Premiership club, so I see Premiership football live in the flesh which is 1000% better than seeing it on TV. Believe me the cheating and the diving has got worse with the mass import of foreign players. Of course English players do it ( remember Francis Lee of Man City ! ) but foreign players have taken it to a new level. This is not me being biased its just my observations of watching LIVE football in the flesh for 50 years. I also go to lower league games where the diving and cheating is nowhere near what it is in the Premiership. These leagues have fewer foreign players.
As for me being bitter then I have to say that I agree England were beaten by a better team in Argentina. You would have still won without the "hand of god" goal. Any bitterness is concerned with all the hype and claptrap that went on after the game.
What would the reaction have been on Argentina if Maradaonas team had been beaten by a goal scored with the hand ?

Maradona won the World Cup in Mexico, which last time I checked was in Latin America. The game in which England was beaten by Maradona was refereed by a Tunisian, which last time I checked was in Africa.

So I don't quite understand why he should have won the tournament in Europe for it to be great. He had no home advantage, Fifa employs more referees from Europe than anywhere else, so what is the difference?

Does that mean England's win in 1966 wasn't great because it was played in England?

I imagine Maradona's reaction would have been the same as the English players had he lost to that sort of goal. But on the balance, Argentina was the better team so if we look at it objectively, then they deserved victory.

Offtopic but,
I am not Argentinian and have no bias towards any South American nation. In fact I have more bias towards England where my grandparents are from and where I will live later this year. I have been a football journalist for several years and have supported Liverpool FC since I was little. Of course diving has increased in the premiership but you cannot blame foreign players. Diving has increased everywhere in the world. I was taught how to dive when I was playing semi-pro football in Australia. Fifa and the FAs must police it better otherwise players will continue to cheat.
