I know what you mean and I can safely say that it works well with apartments where you can't renovate much anyhow, just a few modifications.

I wouldn't waste money with loads of changes just paint so the place looks 'new'. If you do paint make sure to use light neutral colors like white or off white so if they want to use their own color later they can paint over without having to strip the walls.

Renovations before a home sale can bite just make sure to not use wallpaper - we went into a home that had wallpaper all over and it took us a good part of two weeks to get it out before we could start painting.
