This is a huge site and it caters for a large body of teachers in Trinidad & Tobago (about 12,000).

This thread has also been setup to discuss issues as it relates to Teachers within the two islands. To start off... Do you think Teachers should receive an increase in salary?

Yes, I do. I think we work very hard, specially dealing with children who have special needs. Remember that most Trinidadian teachers are not trained to deal with certain situations and they have to deal with it anyways. Yes, I think we deserve an increase in our salary.

TTUTA has been in negotiations for increase in salary. I think for 2 years now. Maybe a TTUTA officer can shed some more light?

Remember public servants are to receive a hike of 25% and I was told ours would be about the same.

Did I hear right on the news some days ago that they are protesting for teachers to get more money when right now their are reports of teachers throwing chairs at pupils, hitting them and insulting them? Not the right time to ask for money if you ask me.

How all those teachers can be protesting when they making more money than a lot of people in this place plus they letting children off early so they can protest what... Parents have nothing to do?

Comments: Why is it the the people outside of the teaching system think that teachers do not deserve a salary increase. They have to be in it to really see what we teachers have to deal with throughout our career. Most people don't realize that we rarely have time for ourselves, since we spend most of our time preparing lesson plans, resources, scheme of work, record and evaluation and the list goes on. we do this in and out of school. For me most of my weekends are taken up preparing all the above mentioned work for two classes that I have to teach simultaneously. Nobody seems to realize that everything starts with the teacher and school. with out teachers, could there be nurses, policemen, doctors, lawyers? Nobody thinks about that. They see us as babysitters for those parents who always have 'thing to do', while 'us' the robots babysit and just take what is given to us. We deserve better. All I have to say is that you have to be in it to really see what takes place. Don't believe everything you hear a.d you cant be judging all teachers just by a few delinquent activities by only a handful. All I am saying giving a fair chance and think about about us. We have families too and must provide for them.

Comments: I am a teacher and I will pass up a pay increase if the following did not have to take place.

Paying for photocopies for my students

Paying for prints for my students ( in addition our principal told the IT technician NOT to connect any printers to the staff room computers)

Calling in parents on my cell phone

Buying materials for use in my class ( our clerk 3 buys the cheapest stuff on the requisition list, eg for a dept of more that 12 teachers she bought one pack of 12 narrow markers, why does she have to make that call?)

Bringing my 12inch laptop to class to show powerpoint from because the principal has one projector per 75+ teachers to use even thought the school has at least 3.

Our principal makes us apply for time off even though she wants us to organize school events such as graduation which requires us to purchase banners, order stationery for certificates etc.

So trying to teach your 21st kids with 19th century tools, I think I need a payrise.

Delilah I cannot believe you have to pay for photocopies for your students! I thought the school pays for that.
