Comments: People are upset about teachers getting a raise for no reason. One cannot look at the few unprofessional in the system and brand all teachers as "throwing chairs and what not". Lets focus on the positive things that teachers bring to the classroom and give them what they rightfully deserve. Now I do believe that teachers should be paid based on their qualifications and experience...take for example a teacher in the elementary system wit 10 years experience and five CXC subject as opposed to another teacher with 10 years experience with a BED and a MED getting the same salary. Teachers should be motivated and seek professional development if they want to improve the level of teaching and by extension their pedagogical skills in the classroom. Those who make the sacrifice and struggle to better for themselves deserve an increase in salary. With professional development comes productivity and hence a holistic change in the classroom. GIVE TEACHERS WHAT THEY DESERVE... ONLY WHAT THEY DESERVE.

Title: When will it end?
Comments: A spanking brand new Collective Barganing period has just begun (01-10-11 to 30-09-14) What has been the outcome of the last period? ELM is nowhere on the table as yet.... Please, could those in the know explain to me why is the process taking so long. The last increase in salary that I could remember getting was in late 2007.
Also, does anyone know when Primary schools teachers will be paid according to their qualifications?
Teachers have been trying to negotiate salaries for YEARS now and our Minister of Education doesn't seem to put teachers as a priority despite the fact that they work very hard under tremendous amount of stress. It's easier to speak from the outside and point out at some "bad" apples in the system but most teachers are dedicated individuals who try their very best to guide and help the children of this nation. They need to be compensated accordingly.
According to TTUTA 75% of teachers stayed away from schools today whereas the Ministry of Education claims it is more like 55%. The teachers are staying home to 'reflect' about the slow pace of salary negotiations because teachers are being paid a 2008 salary. Some schools were totally closed while others were open but did not have classes because there were so few students and teachers.
