Comments: What place does suggestibility have in Mormonism? What is suggestibility - it is where you give suggestive thought about how something should be or feel and then with that in mind you begin to feel that it is the way suggested. Could suggestibility be used in Mormonism even indirectly where many are coaxed into a placebo effect? In an experiment patients who suffer with chronic to moderate pain are sometimes given sugar pills and told that it has the effect of a powerful drug to remove the pain and help them feel better. This is a good example of suggestibility. These patients report actually feeling better after taking the sugar pill.

Suggestibility and Mormonism

In my opinion I do not think that suggestibility could be used effectively on such a large scale for such a large period of time. Especially considering the different psychological and mental levels of the people involved. Eventually the truth would have to come out and the whole base would fall apart.

Not if the persons involved have been raised in the church. Its very easy actually.

Whether raised in the church or a convert, if you subscribe to the beliefs then are you open to suggestibility? Another question would have to be: is following by blind faith the same as suggestibility? If so, then I think I would change my thought to: yes suggestibility would be possible in any organization that has leadership and where there are followers who follow by blind faith.

Basically what I'm saying is that if you was "born" in the Church you cannot see the difference and the suggestibility is there present from birth, you know what am I saying? And yes, blind obedience exists in the church like any other religious organization.

I understand what you are saying, but I do not agree with your thought. If suggestibility is a practice that is used, then it would not matter if you are born in the church or a convert. Either way you are subscribing to the beliefs and practices of the church and therefore would be open to suggestibility. Thank you for the conversation. It is nice to hear others ideas and thoughts.

Well, not sure if I personally subscribe to all the teachings of the Church so it doesnt really affect me per se. I'm a strong believer in prayer and not following blindly everything we're told.

Suggestibility is probably being used in place of 'brain washing' both of which exist in everyday society and we hardly take notice except for when someone tells us about it.
