Thanks for the info . I think I will want to research more about self-hypnosis, it seems like it can help in many ways. I think like the Church's position when there is a medical condition, it is okay to use it (sometimes I wonder how true it is for those people who were smokers and they said they stopped smoking after hypnosis).
Greetings,
A few years back I hurt myself pretty bad at work. So now I am a disability retired Deputy Sheriff.
Sometimes the pain in my back won't even respond to strong pain medications. My Doctor referred me to a medical hypnotist, who taught me self hypnosis to control my pain levels.
I have found that it can be of great help in this area. The induction method consists mainly of breathing and focus techniques along with visualisation.
Once when I had an EEG test, the Med Technician agreed to do a quick experiment with me. Using my self hypnosis techniques I was able to tell her when my brain wave state went in and out of the Alpha frequency at will.
One easy way to learn this on your own is to work with the Monroe Institute "Hemi-sync" tapes. These tapes help to produce this relaxed state of mind with sound.
Check out Robert Monroe or "Hemi-sync" I think you will find it fascinating.

I'm not sure but I think if you look in the Encyclopedia of Joseph Smiths Teachings, under the topic of Hypnosis you will see that Joseph Smith said that hypnosis is of the devil.
I believe that the Lord will excuse those who use it to aliveate physical pain, for instance my mother drinks one or two cups a day of coffee for severe migrane headaches, she is also a current temple recommend holder. Her Bishop told her that the church will not frown down on her for using the only thing that could keep her headaches at bay. So to Heydiz God does not frown on you for it, it is the only way to keep your pain at bay. At least this is how I believe.
To explain in full what self-hypnosis is it is an ancient art in which an individual puts himself into a deep sleep, but yet remains awake (if that makes any sense). To avoid receiving pain. Many years ago I was watching a talk show in which they had a guy who put himself into self-hypnosis then took a ten inch pen and drove it straight through his hand, no blood no pain.
I can see hypnosis as being evil, when you place your will into the hands of another person. However, I can see great good coming from other aspects of self-hypnosis, such as choosing to use it to help overcome deepseated fears, compulsions, etc.
Perhaps it is like most techniques. Pretty much neutral in and of itself. The evil or good of it depending more upon how it is used.

Comments: I strongly disagree about Hypnosis being from the devil. My point is I am a new member of the chruch and never heard of this till now and no one has informed me I was outside the rules on this as most people including my bishop know I am a Hypnotherapist and have used it for entertainment. As far as placing your will, I read when I was in school that a stage hypnotist to prove that you cant do anything beyond your morals under hypnosis gave the suggestion to a subject that he would turn is back and when he did that the subject was to walk over and pick up a knife that was placed on the table and thrust it into the hypnotist back. The man complied, grabbed the knife, walked to the Hypnotist, shuddered as he dropped the knife and came out of hypnosis.
In my practice I have worked with smokers. If I word a suggestion wrong and say they are not a smoker anymore the mind can instantly waken them as the suggestion makes no sense and the whole session is ruined. their mind knows that they smoke and the suggestion is contradictory to reality. I guess I have alot to think about now as changing careers would be hard. One final thought, all hypnosis is self hynosis. I only guide but your mind is the one that does the work. Only puffed up egocentered Hypnotist make statements about controlling someone or violating ones will. The ones you see on stage are carefully chosen from the audience. the hypnotist has learned to screen for suggestability and we are looking for people that would take the suggestion even if not totally hypnotised.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Heavenly Father for the wonderful gift and tool of Hypnosis. You see, when I was in my early thirties I was smoking over a pack a day and had been for about 15 years. One day I heard an ad on the radio for a Hypnosis Clinic to quit smoking. After talking to my wife I decided to give it a try. That night when I sat down and looked around the room at all the other people wanting to quit the smoking habit, I wondered if I was wasting my money.
The Hypnotherapist explained to us that we would be hypnotized 3 times. He also explained that he could not make us quit smoking. He explained that the only thing he guaranteed was that when we were done we would have the choice to smoke or not.
He continued to explain that when we smoked our first cigarette our bodies did not want it and tried to reject it by coughing. But we made a choice and created a mental block. His job was to remove that block.
Well, during each of the 3 sessions I caught myself peeking around the room at the others. I was sure I had wasted my money. When I left I want a cigarette so bad I couldn't believe it. I remember getting in my truck, grabbing a cigarette, pulling out my Zippo, starting my truck and putting it in reverse. I was just about to light my cigarette when I thought, I just spent thirty-five bucks, I should at least give this a chance.
By now it was about 8:30 at night. I went home and suffered like never before. Went to bed craving a smoke worse than I ever had. When I got up the next morning, I went through my same routine of hacking and coughing. I remember grabbing my smokes, my Zippo, and heading out the door.
Every morning at work we all sat around in a circle drinking coffee and smoking while we discussed the days events. That morning I sat in the same circle, with the same group, all drinking coffee and smoking. I remember having my cup of coffee, discussing the things of the day to come, and it never even crossed my mind to light a cigarette. Looking back it is obvious that I made my choice when I chose to not light that cigarette.
That very important event in my life led me to a fascination with the power of choice, and the power of my mind. I researched everything I could which led me to goal setting. This eventually led to me teaching my children about goal setting, affirmations, visualization and all the marvelous tools our Creator has given us. 15 years later it has led me to the LDS church. All of the LDS teachings that I have learned and continue to learn go hand in hand with these marvelous gifts.
Hypnosis is like anything else, it can be used for good or bad. But of the devil, I think not.

Tazz, thanks for sharing your experience. I was thinking about hypnosis and childbirth which seems to be a very popular method. I agree with you that hypnosis can be used for both good and evil hence the Church only accepts it for medical purposes.
Hypnosis as a tool could be effective I suppose, but it is like any medical treatment. Certain drugs are very beneficial to the heath and psyche of certain individuals, but if misused or overused they can be damaging.
My main concern with hypnosis is that you are putting yourself in a situation where you putting yourself in the control of others in the case of therapeutic Hypnosis and essentially opening your subconscious to suggestion in the case of Self Hypnosis.
I would think that if one is more susceptible to suggestion by earthly forces, who is to say that that person is also not open to suggestion by spiritual forces?
Unless the person is well trained there could be some real dangers to Hypnosis and Self-Hypnosis.

The article explains some dangers that could occur during hypnotism. One of these
dangers is that a person under Hypnosis can take things very literally.

For instance, Crasilneck and Hall in their text Clinical Hypnosis: Principles and Applications, discuss the case of a burned patient. While working on improving the patient's nutrition, the patient was given the suggestion that he could eat everything on his plate. One day the patient became ill and vomited on his plate and was later discovered eating the vomitus. |
