Clergy Sues To Stop Alabama's Immigration Law

A growing number of critics say that the law that criminalizes all kinds of contact with undocumented residents including harboring illegal immigrants violates their religious freedom to be a good Samaritan. A U.S. District judge is considering Wednesday whether to stop the law from going into effect Sept. 1.

The Department of Justice has asked a federal appeals court to block enforcement of Alabama's controversial new immigration law.

The law allows police officers to check the legal status of people when suspicion exists, detain them and turn them over to federal authorities. It is described by both its supporters and its opponents as the strictest state immigration law in the nation.

Since the law came into force, more than 2,000 Hispanic children have been pulled out of school, according to the Alabama secretary of education.

Friday's action comes after a federal district judge in Alabama on Wednesday denied an emergency request from the Justice Department and civil rights groups aimed at blocking parts of the new law. Ref. CNN

Illegals seek others to take care of kids

Many illegal immigrants signed documents in the past week allowing others to care for their children if needed, assistance groups say, and a couple living illegally in nearby Shelby County extracted a promise from the man's boss to send their three young children - all U.S. Citizens - to Mexico should they be jailed under the law. A federal appeals court has blocked enforcement of parts of a controversial immigration enforcement law in Alabama.

The injunction issued Friday from the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Atlanta came after the U.S. Justice Department -- supported by a coalition of immigrant rights groups -- requested the legislation, known as HB 56, be put on hold until the larger constitutional questions can be addressed, a process that could take some months at least.

The Obama administration says the Constitution does not permit states to deter illegal immigration, saying an issue with foreign policy implications is the exclusive mandate of the federal government.

Alabama's law, passed by the legislature this summer, would allow state and local officials to check the immigration status of public school students; to detain suspected illegal aliens without bond; and make it a crime for immigrants who lack proper documents to conduct busine ss with the state for things like driver's licenses. Comments: We've been spending millions trying to enforce the established immigration laws and now the Federal government comes along and suddenly we have to stop everything. Totally unfair. Obama needs to be out of office fast.

Having the Feds take control of immigration is how it should be anyways. It can't be that each state does something different because we're one nation and when immigrants come here they can go to any state.
