Washing Machines

We have an old Whirlpool that keeps on chugging along even though I sometimes have to go behind it and give it a good pull as the motor is old. I was wondering about the brand names they have now... which one is best? I have found that another real good trademark is GE.

I have found that Whirlpool outlasts all other makes with the exception of Maytag! My mother replaced her 30 year old Maytag with a new Maytag in 1980, my older sister inherited that 1980 Maytag in 1985 and it is still working like a new one!! biggrin.gif

I was never able to afford a brand new machine, so I got 2nd, third and 4th hand machines, and the only one that really lasted was the Whirlpool. That one died only because the rats ate the wiring and it caught on fire! I was able to buy a new matching set, with the local store owners carrying the contract back in 1997, and I love my Whirlpool!

My best freind had a Maytag, wringer washer! Yes, it still works, and she gave it to a young family in the Branch who needed a machine. Oh how I wish I had one, especially since her son rigged this one to work on either electricity or by manually operating the washing basket. (the contraption works by foot pedals, something like a tread mill ~ get the best exercise of your life and wash your clothes too!)

I would love to have that, what a great excuse to get some exercise in! I actually told my wife about it once, but she thinks I am crazy laugh.gif

When I was little~grade school age [1957-1958]~ my Mom had an wringer washer that was manually operated. No electricity to run it. It was operated by hand turning. It was us kid's job to crank that thing. Because I was only 5 or 6 at the time, I didn't have to really do it. My older sisters and brother had too cool.gif . They hated wash day because they couldn't go anywhere, they had to be *on-call* so that they could relieve each other as "cranker".

What I was allowed to do was crank the wringer part. That was easier to do. And I really got a thrill out of watching all that water being sqeezed out of the clothes. We saved the rinse water and re-used it as the next wash water. The wash water got saved too, in barrels that we flushed the toilet with, or to wash the car, or dog with. This was all in Seattle, WA. and not on some rural farm either.

I got to hang the laundry on the line, actually I was way too short to do the actual hanging, so I handed Mom and Grandma the clothes pins. I loved Wash Day. The entire family working together, the stories we heard from Mom and Grandma and the laughing and teasing.

JB, you guys have a washing machine? When I lived in Trinidad we never had a washing machine. It was good ole' fashion hand washing with a washing board and line drying for us. In my current house we have a GE washer and it works very well. One day I would not mind getting those metallic-looking washer/dryer combos.

Washing Machines

We started off with an old wringer washing machine when we got married, somebody gave it to us, and until we quite got the hang of it, it popped every button off every item laugh.gif
We soon had to get used to it, because I couldn't keep up with all the sewing back on!
Seriously though, it was a really good little washer, and washed the clothes far better than any of the other washing machines that we have had.

In nearly 19 years, we have had including that one 6, so we go through them pretty regularly!

At the moment, we have a hoover combination washer/dryer, the washer side is good, but I don't rate the dryer side of it, and wouldn't buy one again!

Well, since I made that bold statement, guess what, the washer broke down! Turns out the belt broke for the spin cycle. So we would wash a load but it would never spin dry. By the time I found out about it, some of the colors in my clothes had bled out and onto other pieces of clothing. Luckily, because I rent, the landlord paid to have it serviced.
