Iraqi Prisoner Abuse? - Page 3

I read, somewhere, this morning a listing of who has been implicated so far. Most, if not all, of these Reservist MPs work as prison guards in the US. They also don't seem to have particularly stellar careers up to this point.

Now, I knew some real low-lifes in the military, including one man who raped a very close friend of mine, then was able to turn it around and get her into serious trouble as he was being discharged. They make it in, and sometimes they stay in, and make real problems for other people. I think that all of the people involved in this scandal fit the profile of low-life.

Well, the girl England is what they call first class soldier, he joined as a specialist and then she became first class, I'm not familiar with what that entitles but obviously is not just a reservist, right?. I'm extremely angry with this girl, she is 21 years old, pregnant and if you saw the images she is with a cigarrette on her lips pointing with a mocking gun the genitals of the prisoners...just sickening. Reading the comments of the mother of this girl, I could not believe how she was justfying her daughter's behaviour.
One of the soldiers facing court martial is Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Chip Frederick, in an interview with 60 minutes he said he will plead no-guilty and he said:
"Claiming the way the Army was running the prison led to the abuse of prisoners.
"We had no support, no training whatsoever. And I kept asking my chain of command for certain things...like rules and regulations," says Frederick. "And it just wasn't happening."
Listen to me! and I'm starting to get real MAD, you don't need to be trained in order to KNOW that to put naked prisoners and make them simulate oral sex for instance, it is plain wrong, do you know need training for that? do you need training to know that to put wires in the hands of a prisoner and threaten him with electrocutation is wrong? PLEASE!!!!!!. I cannot believe that after all this scandal, they still not recognizing that what they did was wrong!, what is the sense for Pres. Bush to apologize if the same soldiers who did the wrong thing do not feel remorse whatsoever????!!!!!. And he continues....

"Military intelligence has encouraged and told us 'Great job.' "

"They usually don't allow others to watch them interrogate. But since they like the way I run the prison, they have made an exception."

"We help getting them to talk with the way we handle them. ... We've had a very high rate with our style of getting them to break. They usually end up breaking within hours."

Now, we KNOW why they break within hours!!!!! smile.gif-->rolleyes.gif

What happened in that prison is much more than humiliation. The soldier who brought up all this says he saw pictures of prisoners almost deadly beaten and with their noses twisted because of how bad they have been beaten, he also mentioned of a couple of deaths at that same prison.
Now the US government says it was a small group of military personnel. How do we know that?. Rumsfeld knew about it and did not take care it of it properly by informing the President and the Congress, how do we know if was not happening before or if it is happening right now?. There are new allegations of abuse from british soldiers, if that's true, then we are facing real serious trouble.

Now, going back to Rumsfeld, what the heck he was thinking!!!!? he said he failed in taking seriously those reports and not inform the President, sorry but is he mad or something?. I'm sure Bush gave him such a rebuke and the only reason he did not fired him was because we are in Election time, if we were not, I'm sure he gets rid of him.

Iraqi Prisoner Abuse? History & Civil Business Politics

Isn't it ironic that the US Secretary of Defense said that what the US soldiers did to the Iraqi prisoners was un-American and here we are on this forum talking about what is Anti-American (in another thread).

JB, I don't see the similarities. You can do something un-American, that is not the same as being Anti-American.

Un-American is doing something, as a US Citizent that is not in accordance with the beliefs and standards of our nation. Anti-American, I have already given my definition in the other thread

Tena, I know you don't, you would have to be outside the realm of the US to see the similarities which by the way are not to be taken based on word definitions but poetry in motion.

Iraqi Prisoner Abuse?

Now, I am ready to cry. I feel so horrible. Here is a quote from what Rumsfeld said today:

QUOTE
"There are other photos that depict incidents of physical violence towards prisoners, acts that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel and inhumane," he said. "... It's going to get a good deal more terrible, I"m afraid."

Rumsfeld did not describe the photos, but U.S. military officials told NBC News that the unreleased images showed U.S. soldiers severely beating an Iraqi prisoner nearly to death, having sex with a female Iraqi female prisoner and "acting inappropriately with a dead body." The officials said there was also a videotape, apparently shot by U.S. personnel, showing Iraqi guards raping young boys.

To me, this would constitute war crimes, but maybe I am wrong. Does anyone know an "official" definition for it? Even if it isn't officially war crimes, this is just unbelievable from where I sit. Both as a US citizen and a veteran of the US military.

Iraqi Prisoner Abuse - Page 3

I do not know the name they will give it, but for sure it breaks every law both on earth and in heaven and it only reinforces the hatred that Iraqis and others will now have for the US. Often what is forgotten is this... these people in prison have family and friends that care about them... when word gets to them, and then spreads to others... can you imagine the effect? As for those who committed these acts I hope they get the full brunt of the law and their names and faces exposed so that those who think to do anything similar will think twice!

By the way... why would anyone want to take photographs of these things? Maybe the soldiers really believed in some sadistic way that what they were doing was okay and they were not afraid to show it?

I agree Trinidad, from this day on, the images of the torture of Iraqi soldiers will be the only element that people will associate the war to and remember. I would go so far as to say, that the Coalition of the Willing, in particular the US, has lost all credibility. No way can the Coalition continue. An international force must now take the lead, but which countries will be crazy enough to want to take over this mess? and it is a mega mess

The Coalition forces detain over 10,000 Iraqis. Can you image what their families are going through and what the build up of hatred towards the US is going to be. The US is going to have to do lot more than try to pin this on a few bad apples. Now, more than ever the US needs to move away from a policy of force in Iraq to one partnership with the true Iraqi people. But I don't think we will see that.
