Does the doctrine apply to both or are there differences?

Even though the leaders of the Church have specifically counseled us to not read anti-mormon material?, in order to share it with someone else, you must have read it yourself first wink.gif. I am not critizing your point at all because I do read anti-mormon materials sometimes, I am just curious about your position.

I'm not aware of any councel from church leaders not to read anti mormon material. To get a temple reccomend you must state that you do not affiliate or are symphathetic to any apostate group. But I think reading anti mormon viewpoints can help us understand the enemy so to speak. If you are a Bishop and a member of your ward comes to you and says he no longer believes in the church, and then gives a long list of reasons why, hopefuly you as a Bishop are familar with these claims and can respond to his concerns. On the other hand, had you avoided all anti mormon material, you might be stumped.

I don't think I could disagree more with any statement. I believe reading such material invites the wrong spirit into your presence. I think reading such stuff has no valid, good purpose. One, by reading it, you are helping to create a market for it. Two, you allow doubts to creep in. No one is above the possibility of temptation or doubt. You may think you have a strong testimony, but if you allow enough questionable material into your mind, you are cultivating such doubts.

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.  1 Corinthians 10:23

Does anti literature uplift and edify? Certainly not. I don't think it matters whether or not we have been counseled not to read such stuff, and I know I have been counseled in Church, at least by local leaders, not to read it. Still reading it is not expedient, in my opinion.

In my opinion, to suggest it is good to read antimormon literature so that you know the enemy is akin to suggesting you should get drunk at least once so you can counsel the alcoholic.

I don't think we need to read anti literature to be able to defend against it. If I know the doctrine of the Church I will know when I hear false doctrine.

Incidently, I was inactive for 12 1/2 years. I believe my path to inactivity began when I checked an anti-mormon book out of the public library. I didn't know it was anti when I checked it out. I thought it was a book about the Church so I was curious, but didn't realize it was going to fill my head with doubt.
