Sewage that leaks down the walls and on the operating room floors is among the many problems at the go-to hospital for Congress and the White House, according to interviews and documents obtained by USA TODAY. The D.C. Health department is now investigating the leaks at MedStar Washington Hospital Center only after the department received a complaint, not because it was alerted by the hospital. Ref. Sewage leaks in operating rooms persisted for months at Washington's hospital for VIPs, reports show. "A black, grainy foul-smelling substance" coated the floor of an operating room at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, according to a review by the District of Columbia health department last August, a year after an initial report detected sewage leaks in several operating rooms. The 2017 report said the hospital also suffered from at least one "Active leak" of sewage. The 2017 report was cited in a lawsuit filed against the hospital by the husband of a woman who died from a post-operative infection after surgery at the hospital.
