I used to always varnish my wooden furniture with a dark rose stain, but now I have found that there is a lot more appeal in light oak varnish as it keeps the natural wood color while adding a tone similar to the tan of skin. it is brighter too and does not leave a room gloomy.

I might use that thought JB on a table which I will be staining. I love wood and tend to use cherry colours (see the bow in the how to make long bow thread) on walls and flooring. But not real dark just two coats so it has a nice orange back colour to it.

I also find Mahogany colours tend to be nice in bathrooms for cabinetry.

I like varnishing with light oak because it maintains some of the natural appearance of the wood. Darker stains tend to take away from the wood's texture and it almost looks like a solid color.
