Unity College Students & Bill McKibben Launch Road Trip to Reinstall Jimmy Carter Solar Panel Back on White House Roof

A group of Unity College students, led by environmentalist Bill McKibben, set out Tuesday for Washington, DC, carrying a solar panel that once stood atop President Jimmy Carter's White House. In 1979, Carter installed solar panels on the roof of the West Wing as part of a new solar strategy. They were removed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986 and put into storage. In 1990, the panels were brought to Unity College in Maine. The students are now hoping to convince President Obama to reinstall the panel back on the White House roof. Ref. Source 5

As White House Reverses Rejection of Solar Panels, 350.org to Hold 10.10.10 Day of Action on Global Warming

Climate change activists are gearing up for a major day of action this Sunday with the 10.10.10 global work party organized by the group 350.org. More than 7,000 events are being held in 188 countries to urge people across the globe to do something in their city or community that will help deal with global warming. Meanwhile, the Obama administration has announced plans to install solar panels atop the White House's living quarters, one month after the White House rejected a proposal by Bill McKibben of 350.org and students from Unity College to reinstall the White House solar panels used by President Carter in the 1970s. I am not sure I would want the old solar panels. I think the new improved solar panel on top of the white house could function better and provide more green energy to the white house. Next thing they will have to install is a couple wind turbines somewhere on the white house grounds. Together they should provide a lot of the energy needs the white house consumes.

White House under investigation?

Politically connected solar energy company Solyndra recently went bankrupt - even though it received over half a million in taxpayer dollars! Now, the White House is facing calls for an investigation into why they would bet big on the company when even their own advisors were warning it may not be the best move. At least they can't say they inherited it from the Bush Administration, who REJECTED it because it was a risky investment and the company would be out of cash in September 2011. Ref. Source 2

A House panel voted Thursday to subpoena the White House for documents related to the bankrupt solar energy company Solyndra, which received more than $500 million in federal loan guarantees.

Some Republicans have questioned the White House's relationship with the company, accusing it of stonewalling congressional investigators. The Obama administration says it has been forthcoming in answering questions.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee's subcommittee on oversight and investigations voted 14-9 in favor of issuing the subpoenas for internal documents regarding the loan guarantees after a contentious debate among subcommittee members.

Federal analysts looking at the proposed Solyndra loan in 2009 warned of possible problems as well as pressure from the White House to speed up a decision, according to a memorandum released last month by congressional investigators. Solyndra filed for bankruptcy in August and shut down, putting more than 1,000 people out of work. Ref. CNN
