That didn't take them very long did it? They were supposed to be counting every vote by hand. It took nearly a month for us to count all of ours. Even with more people in our country to vote, it is still a shockingly small amount of time to hand count every vote in the country. However, perhaps they just took the quick way around after seeing our ridiculous Florida fiasco from our last election. If they watched the news then, surely they didn't want that to happen and had ample time to insure in didn't happen there.
HUGE CROWD PROTESTS MEXICAN ELECTION RESULTS
An estimated 100,000 supporters of defeated presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took to the streets in Mexico City on Saturday, trying to overturn his narrow defeat in the July 2 election.

I am not surprised a bit! At one of the voting stations in which Calderon won nearly 95% of the vote, there is video tape of someone just stuffing hundreds of ballets into the ballot box! If he stays president, it will be a shame because its very obvious that Calderon cheated. In fact, there is more than just the one video of Calderons people stuffing ballots in areas that he won by huge numbers.
Mr. Obrador has begun his own presidential term of office:

The defeated left-wing candidate in Mexico's presidential election, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has held an unofficial swearing-in ceremony. During his "inauguration" in Mexico City, Mr Lopez Obrador said he was launching a "parallel government". He claims he was the victim of fraud in July's election - a view shared by millions of Mexicans. ... ... Mr Lopez Obrador was "sworn in" by Senator Rosario Ibarra, a human rights activist and member of his party, who placed a red, green and white presidential sash across his shoulders. Mr Lopez Obrador insists he won the July election. "I pledge to serve loyally and patriotically as legitimate president of Mexico," Mr Lopez Obrador said before an estimated 100,000 supporters in the Zocalo, Mexico City's main square. "I pledge to protect the rights of Mexicans and to defend Mexico's sovereignty and patrimony, and ensure the happiness and welfare of the people." Mr Lopez Obrador has promised he will do everything he can to hamper the government of Mr Calderon, who succeeds President Vicente Fox on 1 December. "Those neo-fascist reactionaries better not think they'll have room to manoeuvre," he told his supporters on Saturday. "We're going to keep them on a short leash." |

Wow, things do not look very good for Obrador and Mexico, why am I having the feeling his life is at risk? The present government does not fear in making people disappear, or murder them. This is going to get ugly.
Rather off topic, but... I think the USA has to prepare to receive hundreds/thousands of Mexican requests for asylum. |

Leftist politicians try to take control of Mexican Congress By Jay Root McClatchy Newspapers MEXICO CITY - Fistfights and shoving matches broke out in the Mexican Congress Tuesday after leftist lawmakers, hoping to block the inauguration of conservative President-elect Felipe Calderon, stormed the podium and tried to seize control of the chamber. Conservatives, surrounded by security guards, pushed back the protesting lawmakers and vowed to keep order until they formally bestow the presidential sash on Calderon in a ceremony in the Chamber of Deputies this Friday. The fisticuffs underscore the deep well of bitterness that remains after the closest and most hotly contested presidential race in modern Mexican history and highlight the possibility that Friday's ceremony will be marred by violence. Members of the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, claim Calderon, a member of the National Action Party, or PAN, stole the July election. "We're not going to allow this inauguration to happen," said Roberto Lopez, a PRD spokesman. "Felipe Calderon will not govern a single day in this country." Calderon's transition office declined comment. Calls placed to the PAN headquarters weren't returned. But Ruben Aguilar, a spokesman for outgoing President Vicente Fox, said Calderon will take over on Friday no matter what happens in Congress. "There is an institutional mechanism" for it, he said. "After the first second on the first day of December of this year, we will have a president who was elected by the majority of the citizens of this country." Though PRD militants had made no secret of their plans to seize the podium to prevent Calderon's inauguration, the clashes inside the chamber were sudden and unexpected. Both sides blamed each other for inflaming tensions, and neither had abandoned their positions within the chamber as night fell. |
