U.S. Generals and Iraqi Government Warns U.S. Leaders
A congressman recently returned from Iraq and was told by U.S. generals and Iraqi leaders that if American forces left Iraq, the following would occur:
* genocide,
* gas prices in the U.S. would rise to eight or nine dollars a gallon,
* al-Qaida would continue its expansion, and
* Iran would take over the Middle East.
Do you believe them?
Is that good enough reason to stay?

I am not sure about it. It could happen but I have strong doubts. Since I do not see the US leaving Iraq anytime soon, in a moment those who are helping the US on this would turn their backs and said "Hey! Enough is enough!" and they will just leave unless they get some kind of deal.
I do not believe the US was not expecting an insurgency. I think the EXTENT of it is what they did not expected.

I think they knew there would be resistance. That was the reason for the deck of cards we all heard so much about. These were the people that the US thought HAD to be captured or killed for success (as I said before, 52 was way too low of a number in my mind). What I think has failed expectations is Iraq's desire for freedom. Defectors and supposed high ranking people that were against Hussien told of a ground-swell that would come if only "He" were removed. The biggest disappointment, I believe, for the US planners has been the lack of the Iraqi people to step-up and take this opportunity. I am positive that they were totally thinking they were right about the Iraqi people grabbing control of their country when they saw that footage of Hussien's statue being pulled to the ground, ripped apart and dragged through the city.
I think the problem is not that they do not want the freedom, but they have been oppressed for so long that they are scared or don't know how to take it. The delay has only allowed the insurgents to setup camp and wont be moving anytime soon.
The "surge" of US troops has only brought the total number per square mile of troops to....1. If spread out, one Coalition soldier patrols and secures on square mile of land. I don't care if you are Rambo or Arnold Schwarzenegger, it just can't be done unless you have help...Iraqi help. So the "surge" can help with the fire-fighting from town to town, but the Iraqi people are going to have to keep the town clean when the soldiers leave or else it just isn't going to work and it is this lack of support that I believe the planners were banking on. What they didn't do was "walk a mile" in their shoes and see how difficult that stance just might be...
