Petraeus made the point that if we start drawing down now, we could easily lose what footholds have been gained.

And they pay this guy to come with such obvious conclusion? spock.gif

I think the US will stay in Iraq for a very long time, hopefully violence will be reduced quickly and the Iraqi people can get their lives in order and enjoy a government THEY chose and NOT that was chosen for them.

What is sad is that General Petraeus had to explain that to the idjits in Washington. Apparently, they aren't too bright.

We're all waiting for that day. Right now, the government they chose is letting them down (in my opinion). I DO think America could form a better government (and that treats all Iraqis equally, regardless of religion), but, that's not our goal.

Not sure about that (if is not the goal of the US government). I think the US would definitely ensure whoever is placed in the Iraqi government agrees with the US "thinking". wink.gif

Sure, America wants the Iraqi government to be friendly to America (and thinking like America would be GREAT). I don't think anyone actually believes an Iraqi government will be an American puppet.

To date, Iraq has certainly proven to NOT be a puppet, going it's own way to the dismay of American political and military leaders. While America begs Iraq to reconcile with the Sunnis, the Shias continue to ignore the problems.

And, do remember that the Iraqi government was installed by the Iraqi people - not the United States. The PEOPLE of Iraq elected their leaders. The U.S. soldiers merely protected those who voted.

America has lived up to her word, as her blood is spilled daily in protecting those elected by the Iraqi people to govern in their incompetent and corrupt ways.

That's right in line with General Petraeus's recommendation to Congress in his testimony.

He has been sharp.

That's what is LEAST expected when the US was the one who CHOSE to invade Iraq, let's not forget that. spock.gif

I see this reduction of troops as a mistake unless they are really SURE they have the situation under control.
