:spock: I am sure many would see this attack on the UN as
a 'stupid' move because it is the UN that is now
helping the Iraqi people establish food, water and
other infrastructure. However, we must keep in mind
that the 'UN' for many Iraqis means things like
sanctions, inspectors and restrictions for years
that has caused Iraq to fail in its' ability to care
for the people. Of course this was done (restrictions)
as a way of controlling Saddam, and making life hard
for him, but was it really? Saddam had no want for food
or high living, only the man on the street suffers. No,
I am not in any way condoning this horrific act,
I am merely explaining what could have driven a 'group'
of people to target the UN.

Look at this for instance:
BREMER: IRAQI SABOTEURS 'FIGHTING WAR THEY CAN'T WIN'
As apparent sabotage of water, petroleum and electrical lines continued to
hamper U.S.-led efforts to return life in Iraq to normalcy, the U.S.
administrator for reconstruction in Iraq expressed confidence Monday that the
attackers would be halted.

:spock: How do they expect to 'please; the average Iraqi if
you take them from a 'normal' life to one that has
them without food, water and electricity?

WEB UPDATE: CAR BOMB ROCKS U.N. HEADQUARTERS IN BAGHDAD

Tuesday, collapsing the front of the building, the U.S. military said. At least
nine people were wounded.

Iraq War Post

Now the US is begging for assistance from other nations in patrolling Iraq. I am sure the rest of the World is thinking... 'Well you went in, you handle it! If you wanted international help you should have waited on a UN resolution. Of course the US did not plan on the new style of warfare the Iraqi's are implementing. It almost seems like Al Quieda is stronger now in Iraq than it was before with all the constant retaliations going on against the soldiers and now the UN. The destruction caused on the UN building is a good excuse for the UK and the US to ask for help now, but I believe many nations are very apprehensive about stepping foot in Iraq. So what happens now? Where will this end?

The deaths of this people in Iraq (in the UN building) it is sooo sad sad.gif. It makes me really angry also because the USA and Britain sent researchers there long time ago and ALL of them recommend them to ask for help to other nations in the process of peacekeeping on the basis that the Iraqis will not feel comfortable with a country that is attacking them and then trying to make peace :smile.gif so if there were a more strong international presence maybe this incident would not happen...but again :smile.gif the USA and Britain NEVER wanna hear!!!!! it makes me sooo angry that innocent people are paying the price again. sad.gif

It really makes me mad and sad at the same time. The UN is for peace, has been and will always be. But some stupid fella decided to take it out on the one organization that can bring positive change to the Iraqi people! So senseless. It's like biting the hand that feeds you!
Then again, maybe it is just what the extremists want ... to bring further chaos.

As for the US troops, those were the same guys who went in to bomb and attack Iraq -- it was combat work. Now it's policing work which most of the troops are not trained for. This has been brought up before but again, the US govt just doesn't want to listen. And with a porous boundary like Iraq's, how can they ever prevent foreign mercenaries and terrorists from coming in to fight the US/UK troops?

Oh, and remember the challenge from President Bush? "Bring 'em on" he said back then about the sporadic attacks on the coalition troops.  That must be one of the most arrogant and stupid statements ever. The terrorists are definitely bringing 'em on into Iraq!

It's funny. Colin Powell is appealing for assistance but in the same breath he said that the US will NOT cede authority in Iraq. Then Jack Straw suggested yesterday, that the other nationslet them know what it is the other nations want specifically before they are willing to commit troops. Hello? Are the UK and US deaf or what? Everyone else wants to go in ONLY under the umbrella of UN control! Geez......!

yes, that was pretty silly to say, especially when your enemy is unseen. I think Bush is losing the public, if he loses the election I will be more scared if the democrats come in and try to reverse all that he has now done. Why would I be more scared? Well what is done has been done, so it is either you continue and finish or die. When the democrats come in it is likely there will be a troop pull out from the Middle East. However, the Middle East will not pull out of their minds what the US has done and they will be looking for revenge for sure. When they do the US will be in a worst position than before. This makes countries like Iraq more of a rebel state.

But JB, that would mean the US will forever and constantly  be on guard and eventually be paranoid about their security. It's not a long-term solution. And it's not right that Americans cannot travel freely around the world out of fear of reprisals. History has shown that a change of startegy to one of sincere friendship and assistance will eventually win over the enemies. Think Vietnam, Japan, China.... but then, terrorists are a different breed.

Anyhow, Bush will last no longer than another term. Then what? The one thing the terrorists have is time. And you never know when they will strike next. To eradicate this scourge, we have to address the very root cause of the hatred.

Well of course. I believe making 'friends' will not work here. The US has entered the realm of Israel/Palestine type retribution. Tit for tat.

Of course, you have to remember that unlike the aforementioned countries you named these terrorists act with blind religious zeal. They probably saw their dad killed, lived under the poverty level for years, etc.

True, but according to who? If you ask the US you will get an answer very different from those in the Middle East, and I am not talking about the terrorists, the average man on the street has his own concept too.
