QUOTE (MrB @ 15-May 04, 9:17 AM)
...in many cases as we are finding out today many were tortured ( using a  broom handle to s.... is NOT a simple hazing party has you tend to m,ake us believe)Today without any respect for the values, culture and beliefs of others U.S. marines, tanks, gunships have entered 2 Holy cities and they are literally destroying everthing in their path.

Yes, there was mild torture. My point was that MOST of it was no more than hazing rituals at US (and other) colleges. That doesn't decrease how horrifying it is for most US citizens to learn that some of our soldiers acted so stupidly.

As for the Holy Cities, mosques, or whatever else. The insurgents, who the Iraqis reject, think that they can use the morals of the US against us. They know that we take extra care to leave such things alone. However, when churches, mosques, even hospitals and schools, become military bases, ammunition storage, or staging areas, they lose any of their protection. One of these days, the insurgents will understand that. Of course, they really do understand it, they just know that they can get ignorant people around the world to support their murderous agenda by forcing the US to attack them there.

I don't know where you are getting your info about the Iraqis being happy with the US occupation but it sound like a lot of American made propaganda to me.

Start with this message, then proceed to read some more of the weblog it is on. Start reading some of the milblogs, especially some like Chief Wiggles, and see what the soldiers, IN IRAQ are reporting back about it all.

From what I can see, you are ONLY reading the liberal media's point of view. You are rejecting ALL the good news coming out of Iraq. That is exactly why I try to post such things here. I guess it doesn't surprise me that you reject them, but I will keep posting them anyway.

Update:
While reading some more of the blog, I found this quote:
QUOTE
The saddest incident for the citizens during my last visit was the death of a coalition soldier from Netherlands in a grenade attack. The small town was shocked and I could hear everyone say, "who did this crime is a stranger and he's not of us for sure".

Many of the town's known figures, officials and tribal leaders headed to the coalition base to declare their support to the coalition and to condemn the crime, one of those men said-with apparent affection-during the funeral ceremonies "our loss is big and we feel ashamed; you"re our guests but we couldn't protect your men's live; we"re terribly sorry".

As the writer points out, these are the common people in a small village in southern Iraq. These are the feelings of the real people of Iraq, not the intellectuals, not the militants, not the ones who live within a couple of blocks of the hotels where all the reporters stay, and where they write their copy.

Over 135,000 soldiers are on the ground. They overwhelmingly report that they have good relations with the Iraqi people.

Update 2:

Could all of this be a conspiracy? Here are some items found online:

Are you KIDDING? This trash started from Al Jazeera, and the Islamists are spreading it!

SOMETHING THAT DIDN'T MAKE THE NEWS

A great article outlining some of the differences between what we hear in the news these days, about Iraq, vs what was told in earlier times.

Quick, have you heard of one medal given for bravery in this conflict?

QUOTE
It was a year ago on the march into Baghdad. Brian Chontosh was a platoon leader rolling up Highway 1 in a humvee.

When all hell broke loose.

Ambush city.

The young Marines were being cut to ribbons. Mortars, machine guns, rocket propelled grenades. And the kid out of Churchville was in charge. It was do or die and it was up to him.

So he moved to the side of his column, looking for a way to lead his men to safety. As he tried to poke a hole through the Iraqi line his humvee came under direct enemy machine gun fire.

It was fish in a barrel and the Marines were the fish.

That's what doesn't seem to be making the evening news. Accounts of American valor are dismissed by the press as propaganda, yet accounts of American difficulties are heralded as objectivity. It makes you wonder if the role of the media is to inform, or to depress - to report or to deride. To tell the truth, or to feed us lies.

"Judge Us By Our Actions"

This is an email from a Marine Colonel in Iraq. There is a lot of information about how Abu Ghraib has affected the Middle East, and, more importantly, how it is seen in Iraq. You'll be surprised.

To me US Citizens at any level are very patriotic so we must ask - Why is that? Is it that the journalists think the valor is not as worthwhile to the public as much as the struggles of the Iraqi or is it that the media in general ae also against the war? Maybe it is a question of what sells or is it that their view from the ground seems very different from what they are fed by Military PR?

Iraq War Post

I think it is evidence of strong media bias. Most of the US media buys into the Leftist/Socialist/Communist ideologies. Not the quote that said "Accounts of American valor are dismissed by the press as propaganda, yet accounts of American difficulties are heralded as objectivity"

They CAN'T support propaganda (in their minds) because it is not objective. But republishing Islamist propaganda is considered very objective. In fact, any information that supports the US position in any way is considered non-objective and will not be printed.

BTW, did you hear about the sarin (nerve gas, WMD) IED that was used (fortunately unsuccessfully) in Iraq? It seems the "insurgents" know where the stockpiles of Saddam's weapons are, as they are using them to make the IEDs.

But of course the news media wouldn't report it. There was no sarin in Iraq, right?

QUOTE (JB@Trinidad @ 15-Apr 03, 12:29 PM)
This may seem like a dumb question but I often wonder about these parts of the war...

- How often do soldiers shower? Being in that sun all day with all that equipment must make you stink'

- How much does an average pack, equipment, etc weigh on a soldier

- Does a truck carry their water? Can't imagine carrying water for all those miles

- How do they use the 'toilet' and how would women handle that? How would they handle 'time of the month' in those situations?

spock.gif Why does the US have to make everything a money scheme? Can't they lay some things to rest?

It's tough being a soldier here in Iraq. Morale is picking up now , thanks to internet services , phones. But when the war first kicked off their was nothing. No toilets , phones , showers , or messhall. Just one big desert. We did'nt even sleep in a tent at first. We would sleep on the hood of our trucks in a sleeping bag. When we were in need of a shower. We take our helments off and fill it up with water. Get a bar of soap and get busy. Female soldier's had to do the same. I've been in the army for 12 years so I'm use to it. The one thing that the younger soldier's and the female solder's have a hard time dealing with. Is going to the bathroom squating while your battle buddy is providing security for you with his M-16. I must admit it takes a while to get use to. The temperatures are starting to rise. Yesterday it was a 110 degrees inside the tent. Now just add 10 more degrees to that because of all the body armor we wear. In July temperatures will reach 150 degrees. Now that is hot!!!!!! The summer's last up to October. When I return from this deployment in Jan. 05 it will be nice and cold back in Germany. (my duty station) I will jump into a pile of snow and just roll around in it.

Since I'm out on the road everyday transporting everything from water to ammo. I would have to say yes and no. Some Iraqi's will wave at us and show us love. But their are the others who take pop shots at us , throw rocks , giving us the finger , shouting death to u.s.a. as we pass , or the ultimate disrespect here in Iraq. They will take their shoe off and show you the bottom of their shoe. When they do that to you it's telling you that you are dirt you are beneath them. If you do that to a muslim over here, they would want to kill you. These attitudes towards Americans existed way before the prison abuse. But overall , I would say the Iraqi's want us gone. Not to mention all the I.E.D. that they place out in the road. These Iraqi's can make an I.E.D. out of a coke can , a wallet , pringle's potato chip can. They even put I.E.D.'S inside of dead animals in the road. I know I don't feel wanted here.
