SHIITES, KURDS WIN IN IRAQ

Clergy-backed Shiites and independence-minded Kurds swept to victory in Iraq's landmark elections, propelling to power the groups that suffered most under Saddam Hussein and forcing Sunni Arabs to the margins for the first time in modern history, according to final results released Sunday.

Iraq War Post

The removal of Hussein and liberation of the Iraqi people was not a war aim of President Bush. The U.S. wants to develope a dependent client state in the heart of the world's energy producing region to increase the power of private corporations. The Iraqi people will definitely be better off without Hussein, but they would also be better off without the people in Washington who supported him like Bush I. Also, if it werent for the US UK sanctions that were put on Iraq in the 90's that devestated the country and killed over 100,000 people it is very possible that they would have overthrown Hussein internally. Unfortunately the sanctions devestaded the region so badly the Iraqi people were forced to rely on Hussein.

AL-JAAFARI NAMED SHIITE PRIME MINISTER CANDIDATE

Ibrahim al-Jaafari, a Shiite doctor with an Islamist bent, was chosen Tuesday by the victorious Shiite alliance as its candidate to become Iraq's new prime minister. The decision may well open a period of protracted and rancorous negotiations with a coalition of secular leaders intent on sharply curtailing al-Jaafari's powers or blocking him and his clerical-backed coalition.

All of this was expected, but is there any news about a US military retreat? Most of the Iraqi people voted for this (A US pullout) regardless of whom they chose to run their country.

Actually, they did NOT vote for a US pullout. There was nothing at all on the ballot about such a thing.

As it is, neither the US nor Iraq is ready for the US to pull the military out of the country. The foreign-based "insurgency" would destroy the fledgling government before it ever got a chance to do anything. Even France and Germany recently admitted this fact.

When the Iraqi government is ready, it will inform the US government of its proposed pullout date, and the US will most likely agree to any such date - with great sighs of relief.
