I would like to interject here and ask that you both remember the rules within the Community - no one is higher than these rules - no one needs to go against them because another Member did / does either, if you both cannot carry on a discussion without taking 'punches' at each other then simply do not reply - period.

Bush Asserts U.S. Is Winning Iraq War

President Bush asserted Sunday night the United States is winning the war in Iraq and issued a plea to Americans divided by doubt: "Do not give in to despair and do not give up on this fight for freedom." In a prime-time address, Bush acknowledged setbacks and sacrifice and cautioned there would be more violence and death in the months ahead. "Some look at the challenges in Iraq and conclude that the war is lost and not worth another dime or another day," he said.

Post War Iraq History & Civil Business Politics

I think the problem with the way Bush is handling the Iraq situation is that he is not being honest about the real situation in Iraq. He is calling this invasion the War on Terror, when it is quite clear the majority of resistance is coming from ordinary Iraqis. And we must remember it was a completely different war when he was lobbying for it, so this has caused confusion.

He keeps mentioning victory, but never defines what victory is. And his simplistic language of good vs evil may play well to his core support group, the religious right, but is this really the sort of language that will convince people war is the answer?

I actually don't believe the Coalition will be successful for as long as they remain in Iraq. Most Iraqis don't want them there so it's hard to see the resistance subsiding. But if the Coalition want regime change that will advance their cause they have to make sure the right leadership is installed. The question remains, how long will this take and will the current crop of leaders see it out?

Offtopic but,
I apologise for any remarks that I have said which may offend. But I take exception to being told my profession is useless and would rather keep the debate about Iraq.

Positive News From Iraq

I am glad the Pentagon is taking some measures to get out the good news across the world. As part of our military, I am appalled at how the U.S. media appear to be one-sided in their news coverage, seemingly siding less favorably with U.S. efforts in Iraq. For example, there appears to be more page-one coverage of U.S. deaths in Iraq, and less prominence is given to stories about positive developments, such as Iraqi schools opening and election assistance efforts ("Pentagon rolls out stealth PR," News, Dec. 14).

Shiites Call on Iraqis to Accept Results

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The governing Shiite coalition called on Iraqis Saturday to accept results showing the religious bloc leading in parliamentary elections and moved ahead with efforts to form a "national unity" government. But as they reached out to Sunni Arabs and others, senior officials in the United Iraqi Alliance deepened the postelection turmoil by claiming that Islamic extremists and Saddam Hussein loyalists were at the forefront of those questioning the results.

Rumsfeld Serves Dinner to Troops in Iraq

MOSUL, Iraq - In a festively bedecked dining hall, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld served Christmas Eve dinner to dozens of U.S. soldiers, then fed them his view - with a mix of optimism, caution and emotion - of why the war that has cost more than 2,150 U.S. lives must be won. "We will win this war. It's a test of wills, and let there be no doubt that is what it is," he said. Rumsfeld told the troops that "generations before you have persevered and prevailed, and they too were engaged in a test of wills."

Where is the Gas?

Let us put aside the bombs, soldiers and fighting for a second and let us zero in on the long line of vehicles at the typical Iraqi gas station where there is a gas shortage! We are talking about a world leader in oil production / reserves having a gas shortage. I wonder how the average man on the street feels about this? Along with the necessity of gas, we add the availability of food and basic utilities and thus we pose the question: Does the average Iraqi believe that things are better now?

CIA 'ignored Iraqi weapons evidence'

The Bush administration is facing new charges over its handling of pre-war intelligence, with a book alleging that the CIA ignored a mass of evidence gleaned from Iraqi weapons scientists, months before the 2003 invasion, that Saddam Hussein had abandoned his WMD programmes. According to the book, State of War: The Secret History of the CIA and the Bush Administration, Sawsan alHaddad, sister of an Iraqi nuclear scientist, was one of 30 foreign-based Iraqis who agreed to contact relatives supposedly working on weapons development. Every one reported that the programmes did not exist.
